1. gin or vodka?
Edited on Sun Jul-27-03 01:55 AM by LeviathanCrumbling
I'll only drink um with gin, bombay sphire to be exact, and olives never onion or lemon peal.
;;;;;..

edit: gin n tonic is pretty good too, only a little bit of tonic and a twist of lime. And white russians, and in the morning when you are hung over a bloody baby.

2. Gin, naturally
Every now and again, a couple times a year, I enjoy a vodka martini, though it really shouldn't be called that. It should just be called a vodka and vermouth, very dry.

And I read a great quote tonight by a famous author, and I can't remember the name, that went something like this: "The olive's most god-given existence is to make sure that a lemon peel does not touch a martini"

something like that, anyway. Saw it Fairway Supermarket. thought it was great!!

though I will also say, every now and again, once or twice a year, I like to have a martini with a lemon peel, and not an olive.

I tend to go for regular Bombay, though Sapphire certainly is excellent. I've also come across Plymouth gin recently, great stuff. And also, in the last month, bought a true Holland gin, the name escapes me - very different taste entirely. It's still definitely gin, but really, really flowery and with large taste of orange. Apparently in the true Dutch tradition of gin.

And tanquerey Ten - don't buy it for home, but occasionally, when out at a restaurant or bar, I'll order one, as it is also REALLY REALLY good.

5. No. Absolutey not. Nope nope nope nope.
hate to be a snob, but mostly I'm just trying to be accurate - martini is gin and vermouth, that's it.

I HATE IT when people - and in this case, I'm not so much meaning you as the goddamn bar you go to - that equate the phenome "martini" with the phenome "cocktail". They are absolutely different - the martini is a cocktail. "Cocktail" means any drink that is a liquor base with some other alcohol additive (e.g., martini, Aviation, Sidecar, Combustible Edison) (as distinguished between a mixed drink, which is an alcohol mixed with non-alcoholic mixers, e.g., rum and coke, screwdriver).

So, your sour apple martini is an utter abomination on two counts: a) it's too sweet, even though it says it's sour, and more importantly, b) it's a COCKTAIL, not a MARTINI.

I cringe when I go into a bar - and this happens even in New York City, which is extra appalling - and see a little sheet of paper that says "These are our special martinis". It's simply the height of restaurant and bar ignorance to call mixed drinks and/or cocktails "martinis", but I can't fault the restaurants and bars entirely - because the basic population is so ignorant that if you dno't call a cocktail a "martini", they might not buy it.

Fucker filth. Hate those people. No offense intended to you, WindravenX since, whatever your knowledge of drinks might be, at least you are obviously a Shrub hater. Mostly I speak against the idiot yuppioe filth who have decided that they want a "martini" but they don't want one of those gross gin and vermouth one, they want one of those wonderful chocolate based vodka sweet easily drinkable "martinis". Well, fuck them.

7. LOL, touche
My knowlege of drinks is rather small; however, my rule of thumb is if it tastes good, it's good. I really care less on what "class" or label the drink is :)
(and if it's too sweet, it DOES suck. But if it's done right, IMO, it's my favourite drink).

9. As long as it tastes good
But we must also acknowledge the fact that too often drinks with abominable names (anything involving sex, for instance) are crap. And I - and professional mixologists agree - believe that a cocktail that hides the taste of the alcohol does a disservice, and also anyu cocktail hat uses less than excellent components is an insult to the taste buds of the buyer.

But on the other hand, if a buyer of a cocktail is such a yuppie filth fucker that he/she can't tell the difference between cointreau and triple sec, then he/she deserves the day-long hangover. Fuck 'em.

taste is paramount, obviously, but if the taste of DISGUISING the taste of the alcohol, then the bartender/restaurant is morallt irresponsible, in my opinion, because the drniks taht one doesn't taste the alcohokl, tend to be very strong alcohol-wise, and so, lots of people get duped into it.

11. I feel your pain
But much of the blame lies squarely with the alcohol producers. The Oreo Jubilee martini started on Madison Ave on behalf of Dewar's, it wasn't a grass-roots Mochaccino Midori type thing.

6. Bourbon, the nectar of the gods
Bourbon, either straight up or with a little "branch water" or Coke or Seven ... I'm having one now. It's easy to fix, and it's good for what ails you!

8. BUUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTT - that's not a cocktail, is it?
Straight up, it's just straight up, though I bet that you are not drinking it straight up, but are drinking it neat.

Neat = pour the liquor, with no additives, into a glass

On the rocks = it's neat, but over ice

Straight up = pour the booze over ice, shake or stir it, then pour it out, straining the ice, into a glass

With branch water or Coke or Seven, it moves into the realm of a mixed drink. If on ice, it's an "on ice mixed drink".

Mixed drink = liquor mized with one or more non-liquors

cocktail = liquor mixed with other liquor, and quite possibly with non-alcoholic liquids (such as lemon, grapefuit juice, bitters, sugar, etc.)

12. and keep the gin in the freezer
Pours like Karo syrup and will freeze the olive SOLID for a little while.
Q. (to an old and experienced bartender) How much Vermouth do you use when someone orders a very dry Martini?
A. None.
Just right.

27. I store my bourbon in the freezer
Either Wild Turkey or Old Grand-dad. Takes the bite out of it and you can serve it neat.
My grandfather, a Kentuckian who liked his bourbon bountiful, would blanch at mixing ANYTHING into good bourbon -- ice, coke, you name it. I must have inherited the trait from him -- if I'm drinking bourbon, I'm drinking it cold and neat.
John
After all, why buy top-shelf booze if you're just going to pour crap into it?

21. Extra-dry Bombay Sapphire Martini with a twist
Edited on Sun Jul-27-03 01:56 PM by Redleg
Okay, you purists may favor the olive over the twist but I don't, so there!

I have recently developed an appreciation for Margarhitas on the rocks. Just don't make them too damned sweet!

28. From Ogden Nash:
A Drink With Something In It

There is something about a Martini,
A tingle remarkably pleasant;
A yellow, a mellow Martini;
I wish I had one at present.
There is something about a Martini,
Ere the dining and dancing begin,
And to tell you the truth,
It is not the vermouth--
I think that perhaps it's the gin.
