1. You forgot the time factor
The hate and anger expressed is relative to the time spent growing it.

53. well
There's nothing quite like calling him up and his WIFE answering the phone when he told me he was divorced. There were a lot of things that didn't add up with that guy so you'd think I might have guessed something but not me! 2 years or more and I still can't bring myself to go out with anyone else.

7. The meanest thing I ever bore witness to
wasn't what someone said, it's what he didn't say.

A couple I knew the guy was making plans to leave town and get a job on the east coast. He kept it all under his hat, and one day just disappeared, his apartment vacated, his phone disconnected, no longer employed at his former work.

She was devastated.

I don't care what defense a person might manufacture for such actions, that's fucking mean.

31. There wouldn't be any defense at all for
that, short of having the mob after your ass or being suddenly thrown into the Federal Witness Protection Program, or something like that. Sounds like he actually did her a favor, though, if that's the type of person he really was.

That's the way I felt about my son's father after awhile. I was nearly four months pregnant, and he suddenly decided that I was a horrible, evil, nasty, low-life pond scum because he came home from work and said he wanted me gone within the hour. He didn't want to deal with it, didn't want to deal with the pregnancy, etc., etc., and this only two weeks after he'd proposed, saying I was the love of his life, he'd never felt this way before, etc., etc., etc., yadda yadda yadda. :puke:

But in the hindsight of time (this was thirteen years ago), I've come to realize that it was for the best because if that's the way he really was, who the fuck wants to be with someone like that? Of course, he's told his fiance and the son they had together a few years ago a different story, but that's her fucking problem.

8. This is good, I must humbly say...
Edited on Sat Nov-29-03 08:33 PM by UCLA02
I was in the Navy and was actually stationed close to home. I was "fortunate" enough to be dating a girl that I had it BAD for in junior high and high school. We were from the same small town, but she never even gave me more than the good-friend looks and conversation (she dated a few of my good friends while we were in school and we were.)

So anyway, we were dating for a few months and I was on CLoud 9, and she dumped me via a letter delivered by a mutual friend. I was devastated. Plus, I was leaving for a 6 month trip to the Persian Gulf on an aircraft carrier. Soon after I left on my trip, I get a "hey how ya doin?" letter from her like we were best of friends again and nothing happened. The next time we got a port call somewhere (probably Hong Kong or Singapore) I sent her a postcard. The only thing I wrote on it was:

"HAVING A WONDERFUL TIME. WISH YOU WERE HER."

Never heard from her again.

(with apologies to Leonard Cohen, but she didn't know any better)

12. I got a cowardly letter dumping once....
"I'm in love with someone else" .... Yeah like I cared. I was so mad because I was lookin' for her so I could dump HER... sneaky bugger heard about it and sentme the letter. But afterwards I found her and high-fived her along with the phrase "Alright I was gonna have an ulcer if we didn't break up"

She was so shocked...I'll never forget the look on her face...in front of all her friends and everything.

...where George realizes that if he hides from his girlfriend she can't dump him.

I only remember it because his answering machine message it "Believe it or not - George isn't home..." to the "Greatest American Hero" theme song.

Hard to say. Would depend on so may factors I think.
Like the length of the relationship, reason for the breakup, was it always a rocky relationship, on again off again, etc. Hard to say.

Thankfully I never had to go through a "mean" breakup. They are painful enough the way it is.

13. Not the meanest thing said, but possibly meanest done.
I knew a girl in college from England who had to have the nicest, most committed boyfriend. He would e-mail her every day telling her how much he loved her, and vice versa. He saved up his money for what had to be a year just to get the airfare to fly to the United States and see her.

He arrives at the airport with a colossal bouquet of roses after a 15 hour flight. She meets him at the gate -- and dumps him. That was just downright satanic. As hot as she was, she was never able to get a date on campus after that.

It's not a dumping, it's just a ......... option to not renew the contract.

23. Context is everything. If you say "I don't want to be with you anymore"...
during a big row, it hurts, but doesn't have much of a bite.

If, on the other hand, you cooly and sincerely utter, "I don't want to be with you any more" while you're both dining at a nice restaurant, *that* will pack maximum punch.

I'm giving myself the shivers. Being dumped is horrible. We've all been "dumpers" and "dumpees," but being the "dumpee" is the more difficult, since it usually means that you've been blindsided.

God, I'm so glad I'm married, and I "take the temperature" of that relationship every darn day!

24. Never dumped anyone
I've been dumped once and that will be (hopefully) the worst one I ever have to deal with. I'd rather be single forever than go through that hell again. Essentially, it was a "you did nothing wrong, there's nothing wrong with you, I just don't feel the way I used to think I did", which, really, there's not a damn thing you can do about. Give all of yourself, do everything you can think of, try as hard as you can to make someone happy and develop a great relationship with them for years only to have it all dashed to pieces when the person you did so much for leaves you. How much of what you thought was real was a lie? How much of your life did you devote to wasted time? You may stop thinking about it all the time, but everytime your mind wanders back to it the pain stings just as much as ever.

38. That's exactly what I'm going through now
Except she still wants to be friends with me, and share intimate details about her personal life (thank god none of her new sex life though). What you posted has got to be the worst kind of break up, I've never felt so much pain. Add in to the mix that she still wants to talk with me nearly everyday, though face to face is an extreme rarity (which is good, I still couldn't handle that even 5 months later), and you got pain and confusion.

It's even worse when you know the new guy is nowhere near the quality guy you are.....I better stop or I'll be a mess for the rest of the night.

43. EXACTLY!
Couldn't have said it better myself! As lonely as I often get being single (and I have my son, so it's probably less lonely than for childless singles), I also know just how fragile most relationships really are no matter how hard you bust your ass to make the other person happy and how secure you may think you are and how you may think you're doing everything right. You just never know.

42. A couple I have heard...
Never been the receipient of a bad line, but I've heard many from friends.

A while back, a friend of mine wrote a poem to his girlfriend dumping her, and using such clever lines as "I love the way the moonlight shines off your adam's apple."

I've heard a couple others, like "I hate you more than I could ever love you" and "You would be less ugly if I took a crap on your face." The latter is by far the worst, and was more of a joke of what he wanted to say.

My all-time favorite, however, was when another comrade of mine were sitting around watching TV, in complete silence, and he grabbed the phone, called up his girlfriend, and said "I hate you and I never want to see you again" and then hung up. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my entire life.

And, yes, I am aware of how sadistic my friends are.

Roses are Red,
Violets are Blue.
Garbage gets dumped,
And so do you.

I was considering breaking up with a very hot chick in high school, because she was being quite obsessive about our relationship, and I was older and leaving for college.
One of my friends suggested that break-up line to me, which I was too smart to actually use, but it cracks me up nonetheless.
We did break-up when I went to college, but in a more amicable fashion, which is good because I run into her around Chicago, she's still gorgeous, and I may try to shag her in the future.

Or about sexual technique in general.

I've never stooped so low, and fortunately none of those who dumped me did either (hey, my taste in men isn't *that* rotten). But a few of my friends have experienced this, and it's just about the most devastating crap imaginable! And if you think this is something that can only happen to men, you're wrong. We women have our hang-ups as well.

61. Until my current one, I never had a very long relationship
So I'd usually phone up for a date and be told, "I'd rather not."

Or vice versa.

I don't think I've ever said anything really mean, or had anything really mean said to me. Charmed life, I guess.
