Identifying ambergris is the difficult part.

Mr Jury says that the ambergris, found south of Streaky Bay, must have been on the beach for days.

“It was amazing… the wheel tracks that were going around it… put there by others. The imagination was, that others thought it was a tree stump and didn’t want to put their sumps out.”

This simple failure to stop and investigate has meant that visitors lost their chance of close to a million dollars.

But he says that it isn’t surprising.

“In fact, from a distance on the sand… it looks just like a tree stump”.
