Ugh...it's apartment-hunting time again. Wish me luck.
Astute readers remember my last apartment hunt.

This time the circumstances are better -- I'm moving in with my SO and his daughter -- but the process still sucks. There's a special place in hell for landlords who fudge the apartment's stats in the ad or on the sign and waste my time. "Well, we said it's a three bedroom, but before you get excited, that's really all there is. There's a bathroom-sized kitchen and a closet-sized bathroom. You'll need to use one of the bedrooms as a living/dining room, which is OK because it doesn't have a door or closet. No basement, no yard, no parking. Oh, and be worried about the back stairs."

And, Milwaukeeans -- I'm looking in the Bay View neighborhood (isn't everyone?), so any leads will be appreciated. 3 bedrooms (or at least two-plus-den/office, because that's how we'll be using the third bedroom), cats allowed.

1. Hey I know someone
who just bought a house in that area. Fixing up a 100 year old Victorian. I detect an uptick in cool Chicagoans escaping to Milwaukee. That city is going to be an ever more happening place.

7. If/when Metra gets extended to MKE (like they say it's going to), there
will be a lot of MKE-to-Chicago commuters. There already are quite a few Amtrak/car commuters, but I think that might be the tipping point.

9. You'd think people would WANT to rent these places quickly.
But, no...they don't call me back, and they describe things inaccurately, and neglect to tell me when I ask about the street and the neighborhood that there are train tracks literally in the backyard.

6. We didn't really have a plan.
(Big shock there, I know.)

The East Side's wearing thin on J in particular, but me too.
Plus, his apartment's just too small for the three of us, plus two birds and a cat.
My apartment's the right size, but too old/creaky/lead-painted/no sunlight/crappy neighbors/etc.

New plan:
• I send 60-days notice with my February rent (vacating by April 1.)
• We get an apartment hopefully with March 1 occupancy.
• I move.
• He moves either when his lease is up in May (yep, it'll be a year by then), or when he finds a subletter.

8. They watched football yesterday.
It was ... loud. Lots of profanity. Lots of questions from the kid.
