Gangs of New York....any movie buffs here?
My partner got the DVD and we just seen it.

Wow...this was an impressive movie! Pretty violent, but also pretty good acting...(particularly the guy who played Boss Tweed...it was like seeing those old Thomas Nast cartoons come to life!).

I have to say there are parts that really had me tearing up at times....like the ending.

Also, there seemed to be a real poltical subtext to this movie...

1. The book was good as well.
Some bad history aside it wasnt that bad, but it had the potential to be really really good. I think to much time was spent on the Leo/Cameron fling.

2. Yeah, romantic elementt was a bit slow...& the Know Nothings...
....I guess there needed to be that romantic element for Hollywood purposes, but it was fairly interesting.

The DVD had a "Discovery Channel" documentary putting the whole thing in context, sort of correcting the "docudrama" aspects of the movie.

It seems "The Butcher" was Know Nothing political type as well as a gang guy...which makes that opening scene a bit more understandable.

There was alot of Know Nothing violence in the USA prior to the Civil War, inlcuding massive mob violence in places like Louisville, resulting in alot of deaths and also some churches burned and priests shot...so that much is accurate (maybe not for NYC, but for other parts of the USA).

3. There's still a lot of Know Nothing crap in this country

It's called Clear Channel.

On edit: the movie did not have nearly enough historical details for me. I could have done with another two hours. Are you listening Marty?
