Poll question: If your favorite spice had gone up in price but was on sale...
What would you do?

Your favorite spice had gone up to $0.90 per packet.

But for this week only, it's on sale for $0.60 per packet.

What would you do?

1. I'd stock up on it
He who controls the spice, controls the universe.

12. And even at 90 cents a packet, that's a good price for it
I'd wager.

3. Buy the usual amount. because
*most* spices and herbs only retain their flavours for a time.

4. Spices lose their oomph if you have too much
and don't use it. Buying twice as much might just cause you to have to throw the rest away.:hi:

5. I'd call my dad, the importer/exporter of gourmet foods
and ask him if there was a glut on the market or if this was a marketing ploy.

Then depending on his answer, I'd ask him what he had in his back room at cost that he could let me have.

6. I would only buy what I would use within 3 months

It also depends on the spice. You don't want to buy too much because it will go bad as it's gets older.

13. Depends on how fast you go through it
As people have said, spices lose their strength over time. It doesn't do you any good to buy twice as much if you still have some after a year or so and have to use three times as much to get the same flavor. I don't know how big your packets are. The cheapest spices I buy come in little plastic containers and cost three dollars or so.

15. Most dry spices are only good for 30-90 days anyway...
granted, I have some MUCH older than that, but stocking up doesn't really make sense with most spices.

16. The spices I've bought seem to last 6 months... but...
They're oriental spice mixes. Never had a problem, though maybe some of the spices in the mix had gone useless and I didn;t notice? (even Hamburger helper seasoning mix left for 6 months after its expiration date still tastes tolerable...)

But this whole thread has been educational, I didn't really fathom of their limited lifespan...

17. I didn't think dry spices had a lifespan either, until I read an article
in a cooking magazine. I asked my brother (who's a chef) and he confirms it, although some spices last longer than others.
