Your Pet's names - why did you pick the names they have
I have two beautiful cats - Abbott and Evita.

Abbott's actual name on all his vet records is actually Abbie. I love Abbie Hoffman and was reading his biography when I found Abbott. So I named him Abbie. But so many people would think he was a girl cat with a name like Abbie and I didn't want to scold him with his given name, so basically he is Abbott. But he'll answer to both names!

Evita is not named after former first lady of Argentina Eva Peron. She's actually named after the musical about the former first lader of Argentina. I love the musical and when trying to figure out her name, the movie was on TV (which yes, I adore even with Madonna in it). So she got the name Evita or Evie!

1. StirFry got his name
because of an irrepressible passion for chewing on electrical cords as a kitten.

And welcome to DU :hi:

Franklin was still a great guy worthy of naming our pets after. Of course right about now he's spinning in the grave with the crap our government is pulling!

4. Widget and Gracie
Widget was named Widget because I was finishing my degree and every ficticious plant that produced anything produced widgets. Supposedly there's no such thing. Ahhh, but there is now!

Gracie showed up at my ex's in another state and he couldn't keep her. He was coming to see our daughter for Christmas, so I told him to bring her. She was so small (6 1/2 lbs) that she needed a big name. Lady Elizabeth Grace or lizziegrace. It suits her. She's got attitude, she's sweet and funny.

A cat who is wily enough to capture not one but two songbirds while living totally indoors is hardly "Precious". Anyhow adjectives make horrible names.

10. Angel and Fuzzball
Angel, our tiny little Siamese (5.5 pounds of pure attitude) got her name from DH's exwife, who was his girlfriend at the time. Oh, what a cute little angel! she cooed over the tiny, little, shy, Siamese kitten.

Oh, how little she knew..... Angel, once she got comfy and realized that she ruled DH's roost (the ex didn't live with him before they got married) turned into the queen of all she surveyed. To use a Buffy the Vampire Slayer analogy - she's Angelus, not Angel, or Dark Willow, not Light Willow. She is very smart, too smart in fact, and very demanding. She used to be very quiet, but since our talker died a couple of years ago, she's taken up the slack.

Fuzzball came into their house about a year later, all 5 week old kitten and *shhh so his feelings won't be hurt* not very bright thanks to kittenhood hypoxia. He was literally fluff and fuzz at the time, and the exwife, not being very imaginative with names, named him accordingly. Fuzz is now 12 pounds of loooove, and is currently sitting next to me (not a big lap cat, my Fuzz), purring and occasionally nudging my shorts-clad leg (time to work out) with his cold, wet nose and his fangs - he has an overbite.

I call them (in above order) Big Evil and Little Evil.

16. Both of mine were named after songs . . .
Quinn after "The Mighty Quinn" (or Quinn the Eskimo as some know it). Why? Because I was listening to that song in my office the day he was brought to me, and it just seemed to fit him.

Althea was named after the Grateful Dead tune by the same name just because I've liked the name ever since I first hear the song :) Her name definitely fits her too.

Abbott (who's actual name is Abbie) is a big dork unlike his namesake Abbie Hoffman.

Evita; however, is a primadonna "This is my abode and you are all my subject matters" just like Evita Peron was!

Einstein got his from the first day we brought him home as a puppy he was so busy watching the cat he ran headfirst into a wall DH said "Smooth move, Einstein, what do you do for an encore?" and it stuck. Steiner is a Border Collie with amazing intelligence so it really fits him

I can't remember why we came up with "Sadie" for the sheltie, but the cat MeMe got hers cuz that's all she ever thinks about is "Me Me Me"

here's Stein and Sadie, no pics online of SueZ or Meme

and finally Penny, (RIP) got hers cuz she was bright as Penny and not much bigger than one when we got her. Her "full" name was "Penelope Pocket Pup" and we still miss her sorely

20. My husky is Bragi
When we adopted our Siberian Husky, his name was Bosco. There was no way I was going to call a dog by something I used to put in my milk as a kid to make it chocolaty.LOL. So my husband and I looked over Norse names and found "Bragi" - the Norse god of music. If you have ever heard a husky howl, you'll understand why we thought that was appropriate.

Our male greyhound's track name was Sizzlin' Sammy. So we call him Sam. Our female grey's track name was Hexed. We call her Hex. In German the word Hexe means witch and since I'm Wiccan, we figure it fits.

Our senior whippet was found abandoned, tied to the door of a dog shelter in North Carolina. One of the women who worked there called her friend who had Italian greys and did greyhound rescue and asked if she would take her. Caroline did and took in a poor little whippet puppy who they guess was 5 or 6 months old. Caro loved things Egyptian and named the puppy Ptah. When she put him up for adoption, I called and when I heard his name I called over to my husband that his name was Ptah, just like the statue of the god in our living room. Caro gave him to me and there was no way I was changing his name. Ptah has always been one of my favorite Egyptian deities. Our younger whippet was sort of an accident. But we love him anyway. Because Ptah has an Egyptian deity's name, I wanted one for the whippet puppy. The problem was that I couldn't find a good single syllable male Egyptian deity's name, and believe me, I tried. Since I've got a degree in Egyptology, I personally would have no trouble yelling out, oh, say, Wepwawet, but it's a bit cumbersome for everyday use. So we named him Djet (pronounced Jet) after a first dynasty Egyptian pharaoh. Also, it's sort of a play on words for how fast the little bugger can run.

The rats all have deity names - Isis, Hecate, Nepthyses, Ma'at and Seshet. Just because I like them.

The guinea pigs are Margarita, because she was my stepdaughter's guinea pig and my stepdaughter likes margaritas. Spot got her name because dear stepdaughter bought her to be a companion to Margarita and kept waiting for a name to strike her. Since she has a spot of white on her nose and a white spot on her back and because he was getting fed up with stepdaughter's inability to name the blasted thing, my husband started calling her Spot and the name stuck. I like it because when I take them out of their cage to clean it I inevitably say "out, out damned Spot", something I always wanted to do with a pet.

22. We have 4
not counting our fish.

Wynston is our beagle/daschund mix that we brought home from the shelter because his picture online was so ugly I knew no one else would take him. As soon as I saw him, I realized he just had a bad picture; he's the most gorgeous dog and absolutely lovable! In fact, he's too clingy most times; a real mamma's boy. When the lady at the shelter opened his gate so I could pet him, I crouched down and he laid his chin on my shoulder in a giant puppy hug. That weekend my dad-in-law came down and as he was leaving told us to take good care of Wynston. The name just fit!

Q, my queen kitty, is acutally named Cuervo. I got her in high school, a stray that found her way to my friend's house, and back then I did everything I could to annoy my dad. Spelling is a big pet peeve of his so when I gave her the name Cuervo, I knew I had to call her "Q; it's short for Cuervo." But mostly she goes by Lovey when my husband and I talk to her.

Rambler is our pug who was a rescue. Some jerks hit him on the highway and knocked on my in-law's door late one night saying they didn't have time to take care of him. My mother-in-law and her husband, drunk, rushed him to the emergency vet and shelled out several hundred dollars to have him taken care of. He was okay, just some scrapes and soreness. He was put on eye drops for a banged up eye and some pain meds. They called us and asked if we knew anyone interested in a pug and it just so happened that my husband had been talking for a couple weeks about watching the shelters to see if one happened to come in. We went to town 4 days later and brought the Little Man home with us and named him Rambler 'cause he obviously was a Rambin' Dog.

Mustang is my baby kitty. I got her in April when she was 3 or 4 days old. She was bottle fed and raised by me and my husband tells us almost every day that we're "disgustingly close." When I come out of the bedroom every morning, she's waiting outside the door and stands on her back legs, arms in the air, for Mommy to pick up! She is rotten but well deserving of all the attention she gets. I was trying to come up with names one day while I was feeding her here at work and my coworker suggested Shelby, after the Mustangs. My nickname in high school was Shelby and that's my email address so I didn't like that but went with Mustang Sally instead. She usually gets called Missy or My Baby (which she comes running to) and I tell her that I'm the only thing she has in the world!

Well, it's a dog that I named with my sister who adored Reba McEntire at the time. It's still a perfect name even though Reba McEntire is a Repuke! When we got our dog, who is a beagle...what kind is yours?, she was a bred puppy who the breeder's grandkids had named Sally (along with a brother named Gomer) but that just wasn't right.

Anyway, it's a small world!

28. Oy...the whole horde? :)
Caesar: the black and tan tabby; he came, he saw, he took over.

Socrates: gray with a white bib and white footsies; the s.o wanted to name him Socks after Socks Clinton; I said there was no way I was going to have a cat named Socks unless it was short for something else.

Plato: Socrates' brother, white tabby, looks like he wears a toga; made sense to also name him after a philosopher.

Evie: the little black cat with green eyes, Socrates' and Plato's sister; named after Rachel Weisz' character in The Mummy. her full name is Evie Sekhmet O'Connell.

Quark and Neutrino: I named their mom Antimatter because she was the exact opposite of Evie: white with blue eyes. They were outdoor cats until recently; Quark moved in with us a year and a half ago, and we took Neutrino with us when we moved last May. Their brother Tachyon took off at age 10 months, presumably to find a girlfriend.

Imhotep: the father of our chillens (except for Caesar), black with green eyes; the Sherman tank reinterpreted as a cat. After naming his daughter Evie, it made sense to name him Imhotep.

Each cat has at least a dozen nicknames, and they know and answer to all of them.

30. Ready? I have a lot....
Chimera is a black, witchy TB ex-racehorse who came with that name. It fits her so we never changed it. Besides, in the TB world, a lot of people believe it's unlucky to change their names (not that we are persuaded by this... really....)
Riva is her first foal, had to be an "R" name per breed/stud requirements (Trakehner)
Rain is her second foal: same reason, same stud.
Flip is her third foal: named by my youngest daughter since he looked just like the foal in an old horse book by Wesley Dennis called "Flip". This foal's sire is a Connemara - no naming requirements.
Iree ne Grainne is her fourth foal: named by my husband. Same Irish sire so no breed requirements. The name means "Rays of the sun" or some such nonsense. My husband just liked the way the name flows. Barn name: Ray.
Irish: an Irish draft/TB named by my oldest daughter (he's her horse so she gets to name him)
Misty: the Shetland/Welsh cross named by my younger daughter since the pony looks just like Misty of Chincoteague (this is her pony, she gets to name it).
Lazer Ridge: Thoroughbred racing name. Just never changed it - successfully raced with it, successfully competes with it.
Elmo: house cat, named by oldest daughter after Elmo on Sesame Street
Lucy: house cat, named by oldest daughter after her favorite name.
Xela (pronounced Shay-la): a Shepherd mix we got at the pound, name comes from the old Mayan name for a city I spent some time in in Guatemala.
Barn cats are all named by boarders at the farm: Tia, Felix, Dipstick, Lucky, Suza and Chip.

33. Redford, Merlin and Melisande
The cats.

Redford was named by his previous owner but we kept the name because he was older and already knew his name. Anyway, it is a good name because he is red.

Merlin and Melisande are out kittens, and they are brother and sister. I wanted names from mythology or fantasy, but I couldn't find any good boy/girl, brother/sister names that I really liked. My husband chose Merlin for the boy, but Merlin didn't have sister (that I know of). I liked the name Melisande from a fantasy series I've read. So those names worked well for the alliteration factor.

Sydney (cockatiel)- Name that could have gone either way gender-wise (lucky us!). Austrailian origin.
Frankie (cockatiel) - The crooner to Sydney.

38. Before they were married, my brother got a puppy for his wife.
They named him Jack. He was a Great Dane-Golden mix and he grew up to be a big, beautiful, friendly dog. A couple years later, by nephew was born, and Jack became his Friend, companion & protector.

When my nephew was about 8 & Jack was about ten, the vet found out Jack had a heart condition and wouldn't live much longer. After a a lot of tears & pain they decided to put him to sleep. My nephew was inconsolable.

The next summer my brother got him puppy, hoping to replace the family member they had so loved. This one was a black & tan mutt, but had long gangly legs & a wonderful face. You could tell he would be big too.

After some cajoling, my nephew accepted him, saying "There's a chance he'll be as good a dog as Jack."

And that's what they named him: Chance.

Moe, Curly & Larry. I have always enjoyed the stooges. (its a guy thing, I have no explanation for it).

This is PeeDee. She is Moe's mom. (the darkest of the three pups) Her previous owner called her Blondie but he kept mentioning that she was a pretty dog. (as he tried to get me to take her in her advanced stage of pregnancy)
I have really enjoy her company and she is the perfect dog.

This is Angel, she arrived pre-named and pregnant. The two lighter dogs are her pups. She is an attention fiend, she will let you know when you are done petting her.

This is Buddy- also pre-named and the sire of all the pups. He was part of the package deal. I love him to death.

Flea Taxi and Chairman meow. I found these twin brothers on the side of the road by the grace of God and the Tennessee Highway patrol. I got a speeding ticket (200 bucks) and I happened to stop right where these two guys were. I took them home with the thought of finding them a good home but the way they stole my heart so quickly was amazing.

59. Elmo and Benson
We picked the first kitty's name, Elmo. Not Benson's, but it fits him to be called Benny. Hence, my pen name because he is a cat of frivolity, and my alter ego is as such. He is a beautiful boy; an orange tabby.

60. Gomez (the pug) got his name
because really...what else are you going to name a pug? It's GENIUS. :D

Lola got her name in a very protracted way: We went to the Cingular store to replace my phone (the one I dropped in the toilet during the Milwaukee pub crawl :D) after it finally died. I had a pic of Gomez as my wallpaper, and the lady at the counter was all "Oh! I love pugs!". There was another customer in the store whose daughter had a pug and was looking for a home for her. Her name was LuLu. Well, of course at the time I was afraid to say yes...I don't know this lady from anything and all. But afterward I couldn't stop thinking (and talking) about her. I even went back to the store and asked them to try to find the lady and get her contact info. No joy. :(

All this time, as LuLu is rather awkward, I was calling my phantom puppy "Lola". I would ask Gomez at night.."Gomie...where's Lola?" hoping the next day to get a call from the Cingular people. When it became apparent there was gonna be no Lola, I resigned myself. Meanwhile, Hedges in all his deviousness, recognized my despair and was out puppy scoutin'. He went to a store and asked the puppies "Are you Lola?" until finally a black and white puggle answered his question. She came home with him that day with her hot pink collar and leash and she is the most Lola-y Lola I've ever seen in my life. :D

Pets of the past:
Pandy--a great tortoise shell cat whose real name was Pandora because she got into a lot of stuff she should not have.

Tuna-boy--the greatest of our cats--a grey tabby boy. Cats like tuna, eh?

Acid--a white cat with a grey spot on her head--named at a troubling time by another family member...

John Cougar Meloncat--I called him Melon--his color--the vet called him John.

We had a run of fem cats: Olivia, Rose and Grace. Grace because she was grays.

Small--a lummox of an Old English Sheepdog--named for one of the Winnie the Pooh characters.

Brandy came with her name--and she was brandy-toned.

Daisy--originally named Trek--but that rhymes with dreck--not a good name for an animal one likes to think is house-broken. Daisy is dainty and spritely. My mom can't get over the fact that we named the dog Daisy, as she has a relative by that name.

65. Thomas came to us with his name , so we did not change it
Lewis was named because he was the intrepid explorer of the litter

CatZilla was named because (at the time) he was by far the largest of the litter (he was later out classed by Lewis!)

Clark: well, if we had Lewis somebody had to be named Clark.

67. We have 3 cats. Daisy, Porter, and Murton.
Daisy got her name because of a phone call on the day we adopted her. I was verifying employment for my job at a mortgage company. I asked about someone named Jane Suchnsuch and the lady on the
phone was confused for a time. Finally, she blurts out 'Oh you must mean DAISY' in the most cheerful voice imaginable. Daisy was a nobrainer.

We adopted Porter from our neighbor downstairs. He already had his name. Sorry to say, he was named for a character in a Mel Gibson movie. We love him anyway!

And Murton was named after Chicago Cub leftfielder Matt Murton. They both are youngsters with bright orange fur/hair who came out of nowhere last summer.

I picked the name because I loved the brave heart of the Tolkien character, I wanted to be reminded of the gentleness and loyalty that was also there in one beautiful spirit.

77. I have had three dogs in my life and a cat
First dog was named Portia as I was reading Shakespeare at the time.

Next dog was named Kelsey. Cannot remember why.

Last dog was name Nikita after the movie La Femme Nikita, because she was a badass too.

I had a cat named Serenity, that was given to me as a sobriety present from a now-long-lost friend.
