9. Yep,
there used to be advertisements for blooper albums (vinyl) that said "listen to these classic boners."

5. Not only that, but
when you made a mistake, you "pulled a boner."

We are evolving. :7

7. Question...
the guy who played Kirk Cameron's friend (Boner) on the show "Growing Pains", was he named after a mistake or after something else?

10. That may be a coin toss,
but since it was on a wholesome network, it must have been a mistake.

12. Yeah.
When my parents moved, I found an old book called "Book of Boners."

I was so disappointed that it wasn't illustrated. :(

And they haven't won one since!

26. And he was referred to ever after
as "Bonehead Merkle."

If you research that, though, you find Merkle wasn't really at fault. Rather, it was the quick thinking of Cubs' second baseman Johnny Evers that "cost" the Giants the pennant. Merkle only did what all runners did in thinking the game was over when the winning run scored and subsequently not bothering to touch second base.

Still, from the Wikipedia entry on baseball jargon:

bonehead play or just "boner"
A mental mistake that changes the course of a game dramatically. See "Merkle boner".

20. I remember the time, and I remenber the change.
It was (for me) when a HS friend explained to me what the definition of a 'boner' was...... circa 1981 or something.

25. I am not sure what the difference is
usually when a boner happened it was a "foolish and obvious blunder" certainly not something that had any practical purpose.

27. Well there's the obvious tie-in
Boners do tend to lead to mistakes 9 months later after all...
