15. I was a photography major in college...

...for about 15 minutes, until my old man got wind of it. "If you want to major in photography, come work for me and I'll teach you everything you need to know." So, I ended up with an English degree that I was able to get without challenging myself or really accomplishing anything, or having anything to show for it. At least if I'd stayed with photography, I'd have a ton of old work that I could be embarrassed about, instead of just a little. :) Actually, I like a lot of what I've managed to not lose over the years. So now, as part of my mid-life crisis (I presume), the fool returns to his folly/photography.

So, DA, what else do we have in common? Can I buy you a hot chocolate sometime?

Photography isn't really conducive to book-larnin'. (What art is?) You've gotta shoot, shoot, shoot, and critically evaluate your work. I think it's better, too, if a lot of your early experience is with film — particularly B&W, so you learn the zone system — and you process it yourself.

'Course, since I focused (ahem...) on photojournalism, I never learned much about portraits, artificial light and stuff. I pretty much suck at shooting stuff that doesn't move.

I have been out of the photog hobby loop for a long time. But I will.

Yeah, I found out that it pays to shop around even for student discount deals. You would think that every school would offer the same deals through Apple, but they don't. I got MUCH better software deals ordering through schools than through the local Apple dealer, and the bigger universities had better deals yet. Apple doesn't care if you are a student in the school from which you actually order the software, as long as you are a student in an authorized school somewhere. Here's my secret - don't go just by what the school has listed for sale on their website; talk to the software purchasing manager and see what they have on hand. Every once in a while you can find a real steal.
