1. It was good and bad
The bad, for me:
* going into the psych ward for a week
* divorcing my spouse of nine years
* losing my house of eight years

The good:
* going into the psych ward for a week (Itgave me a chance to get my life back on track)
* divorcing my spouse of nine years (I got out of a very bad relationship, which allowed me to meet somebody who loves me unconditionally and doesn't emotionally abuse me).
* losing my house of eight years (The place was falling apart, and ate up most of my $$. Besides, I hated owning a house, anyway).

Life is what you make of it.

2. For me, even the most dire years of late have been better than 2000
was for me. I hated 2000...I wish I could go back in time and kill it. So 2005 wasn't so bad, and it included some very good, and some beyond-very-good.

But 2006 is going to be excellent.

76. Yeah. For me, it's most of 1998. Nothing will ever be that bad again.
And as crappy as 2005 was for...most of us...and the world...I personally, despite my anguish, had less hope, fewer prospects and more agony in 1998. So, at least I'm not there!

59. well, we each dig hole, then bury it when the year is truly dead
when midnight hits our respective time zones, we each dig a small hole. when midnight hits in the last time zone, and bury a tangible object that contributed to the worst the year. or you can cremate it and bury the ashes in the same order.

63. Okay
I have a whole dirt lot waiting for me to dig a hole.

I have some debris from the house, remains of my house that isn't salvagable and actually acts as reminders of the storm -- I can bury that!

That sounds like a great idea!

dig the hole at midnight in your zone.leave it empty until its midnight in the final time zone.
THEN you dump the shit that is related to the worst event of the year, bury it, and last but not least, the "Blessing"

Burst appendix in June. Had to pay the state almost $3500 for sales tax on internet cigarettes. Haven't found a job yet. But--on the good side, my husband and son are healthy. And, my son just got his degree from U of M. I've had better years and I've had worse. :dilemma:

My 2005 started off pretty good, and got better.... went swimmingly until August, then it tanked for a while. Picked up again in September and has been going strong every since.

I have every reason to think 2006 will be very good to me! :D

Jan 95 to July 96 was my year+ in hell. Nothing will ever beat that year for sheer hellish misery. But I climed out of it eventually.

88. Just out of curiosity, what happened in '95-'96?
Curiously, for a few DUers, the mid-to-late '90s were hell on earth. I know very few people, especially liberals, who were hurt that badly in those prosperous times of sane government and a slightly better society so I always like to ask what went down. For perspective (and a reminder that things can suck badly even in "safe" years). You can PM me if you don't feel like sharing in the thread.

22. Hands down the worst year of my life. Absolutely.
This was a *HORRIBLE* year. I could make a list, but I won't. My worst year healthwise, my father in law was murdered, worst stress in my marriage, worst finances, *'s second inauguration, my brother freaking out on me on Thanksgiving and telling me how much he despises me, etc. I have had awful events in past years, but this was the worst combination of all of them in one year. And then the holidays came and my grandmothers, grandfathers, dad, and biological mother weren't here (They all died in past years) just to make the pain even worse.

I cannot imagine having a worse year from a personal standpoint. I will NOT be a bit sad to kiss this year from hell goodbye.

I have made REAL resolutions (Not "lose 3,000 pounds, make a billion dollars" things I can't do, but REAL ones that I can empower myself to accomplish) and I'm determined to make my life, my home, and my country better this year!

Bring on 2006!

90. Thank you, Iris
But truly, it could have been much worse. At the end of it all, I still have my marriage (I think a lot of the tension came from our grief), my health (came through the health problems), a wonderful 5 year old son, my home (which is more than I can say for those on the Gulf Coast...), my job, and DU.

I had a lot of heartache this year, but I am looking forward to shaking this year off and making the things I can better.

Thank you for the good luck wishes- I'm certain this year will be better. I'm actually feeling hopeful right now :-)

I too was saved by a seatbelt in a horrific rollover into a 90 foot deep ravine in 1999. Permanent damage to me was minimal. The wrecker people said they had never seen someone survive something like it. I thank the Lord every day that I made it through that thing, and I'm thankful that you made it through yours!

I didn't receive any injures besides a 1 inch cut on my ankle and the knuckles on my left hand scuffed up from punching the door open. This was one of those big utility vans flipped upside down being hit by a redneck in a big ol' pickup truck.

113. We are both really lucky!
That's incredible, isn't it? Our bodies can seem very fragile at times and other times they are amazing.

My worst injury was a broken arm- I thought I was going into water (it was night), so just as I was going over the guard rail (my car hit it at just the right spot, where it acted as a ramp instead of stopping me), I hit the button to put my window down. My car his while my arm was still there and caused it to break. It healed completely (after surgery). I had whiplash, lots of bruising, and a lot of pain, which eventuall subsided. I do have some mild nerve damage in my arm, but the only consequence has been mildly altered sensation and a spot where I can get a shot without feeling it
:-)

When my car stopped rolling (and I don't remember anything between hitting the window button and realizing I'd crawled halfway up the hill out of the ravine), the driver's door came to rest against a small tree with a trunk about 8" in diameter. They figured out that to get my door open I managed to kick the door so hard that it broke the tree. I crawled out of the ravine and walked half a mile to the nearest house. I'd lost my shoes and my clothes were torn. No coat. It was January in OK- No snow, but very cold.

It really is a miracle. I am thankful every single day that I had my seatbelt on and that someone was apparently really watching out for me that day.

Anyway, I didn't mean to ramble for so long- Whenever I get thinking about it I am still amazed to this day.

83. Okay, you've got me there.
The bonds I formed this year with fellow activitsts, though they aren't really friendships, exactly, are what enabled me to survive. I wouldn't trade those for anything and I wouldn't exactly have them unless things had literally gone to hell. Which is hard for me. I would erase 2005 if I could, but--then where would I be? I look at the brain I had exactly one year ago and...it's so small. So is the life around it. Despite how jaded, informed and learned I thought I was at that point.

42. AMEN!!!
My wife lost her job, I could only get low low paying jobs, as a result we got behind on our mortgage so we had to sell our home and small ranch here in the country at a lillegal codemakeRemote('duboard.php?az=emotion_table')
Smilies lookup tableoss to keep from losing it at foreclosure, at the last minute, the IRS filed a bogus lien against us so that it took an extra month and a half to close and we still had to pay the IRS over $8K just so we could close (which we are still contesting) the transmission went out on our truck, I finally got a job with the local appraisal district, but didn't last a month because I am not an idiot (which is basically what I was told when I got the "I'm afraid you don't fit in" speech)

THe year started with my doctor setting me up for a stress test (aint that a joke) because I had complained of chest pains. The test turned out to be over $6000 and our insurance backed out after my wife lost her job. I'm still getting collection calls. We haven't been able to afford any of our depression or other medicines for at least the last 6 months medicine ....... should I go on?

This year has been CRAP!!!

:hurts: :hurts: :hurts: :hurts: :hurts: :hurts: :hurts: :hurts:

51. Oh, I'm with you on this one.
Yes, "Good riddance" is precisely the thought I had about 2005. We began with the aftermath of the tsunami, moved on to assassinations, then came hurricane season, a major earthquake, and through it all that THING at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue preened and strutted. :grr:

Here's to better times and better leaders. :toast:

57. Not the worst year ever (2003)
and not the second worst (1995), but the third worst for sure.

The year started with my collegue Reagan turning into a psycho bitch because I refused to kill an injured bird. (I went behind her back and took it to the Humane Society.) She totally freaked out and told the boss I was insubordinate (even though we had the same job title) and spent the first half of the year going to the boss and bitching about me about every single stupid thing. I tried to take the John Kerry-esque high ground, with little success. Fucking bitch.

In early August my friend Jason OD'd and died.

A combination of depression, backstabbing, and lack of botany skills led to my termination in mid-August.

I went to Maine and had a weedy birding trip. It was okay, but not all that.

Two weeks after that, I fell down the stairs and bruised my kidney and was sick as a dog. And some days I wonder if I'm fully recovered. We're still battling with the insurance company over that.

I moved back to my mom's in Redding because Oakhust sucked really hard. I had few friends and the town was full of tweekers and nazis.

After I moved back my car got in an accident. Hit and run.

My cat died in November.

And finally, on Thanksgiving, we were robbed and my new laptop was stolen.

So yeah, 2005 sucked hard.

:P

It's been the worst year from a personal perspective in a long time. But, since October, I've been on a program of renewal, with 2006 being the payoff. That's the plan at least. :)

And it could be a lot worse... I think about all the DU'ers who were in the hurricane, and my friend Kabe who was in Thailand during the tsunami and ran from the waves and survived, and the people in the earthquake in Pakistan and Darfur and the wars...

Things could be a lot worse...

Bad times give you perspective on the good times. :D

and it will be over. Can't say it was my best year. x(

There were a couple of positives, but for the most part, I'd put it as one of my worst ever. Losses are always tough. I have to start all over again, make some major changes; I don't expect 2006 to be much easier, but I hope I'm on the right road.

I hope 2006 brings much happiness to everyone at DU! :grouphug:
