have you tried "freecycle.org? Most areas around the country and the world as well, have a freecycle program. It's a mailing list of people in your area that have something to offer others because it's too good to throw out. My freecycle list has been invaluable--I've gotten a washer and dryer from others, as well as other, smaller stuff. On our list, there is one gentleman who will take used computer parts and build computers for less fortunate members of the list. And it's all free. The only requirements I can see are that those who are offering something usually want the item(s) gone fairly quickly, and you need to be able to pick them up as a result. And, conversely, if you have items you want to get rid of, you can put them in your local freecyle mailing list and get others to contact you about them. I suggest this because there are usually good natured computer people who are often willing to lend a hand if possible, and a "recycled" computer might be exactly what you're looking for right now if you can't afford to get a newer one.

It's becoming a great way for people to do some bartering like in the old days. It's a higher tech version, but it still works! I've seen some outlandish requests from people as well, like people looking for cars, sewing machines, and other stuff, but there appears to be someone out there with the item to get rid of!
