Okay, it's not even the clue. It's the whole damn answer.

Other than having good hygiene and clean clothes, any lasting "attractiveness" in a man has pitifully little to do with his physical appearance, and almost everything to do with his heart, mind and soul. And especially, being a good listener. But I digress.

Cases in point:

The princess and the frog.
Beauty and the Beast.
Cyrano de Bergerac.

Thus, therefore, ergo... men who consider themselves "attractive" by conventional standards but who still can't get a date because "nice girls date only bad boys" need to pick up the clue phone and realize that bitterness and sexism are actually not attractive.

Neediness, whining, and self-loathing are a real turn-off. It tells me "this guy is going to be high-maintenance," and I just don't have the energy or desire to lift him out of that.

...then at least patently unrealistic expectations/requirements for her "attractiveness" and utility as fueled primarily by the media and entertainment industries. Symptomatic: those men who compare their current girlfriend's "attractiveness" to that of others he has dated, and assess a woman's attractiveness based on what others (including society) say about her beauty, or lack thereof.

Men who turn down all kinds of perfectly decent girls because they need to lose a few pounds or don't have the kind of airbrushed beauty you see in magazines or on TV, and then bitch about how girls don't like them. Um, yeah. Maybe it's because you're desperate to date the really attractive, really high-maintenance, really spoiled and selfish ones who go for the really attractive, high-maintenance, self-centered boys so they just use you until one of those comes along?

Some good looking men are assholes, some are wonderful. Some jerks are ugly and some are great to look at. Maybe society makes it a little easier for good looking people to have a sense of entitlement, but there are a lot of homely folks with chips on thier shoulders, too.

I don't think there's a huge correlation between physical attractiveness and attitude, either way.

But my title comment was not meant to be a sweeping generalization so much as satirically bent repartee directed toward a few serious threads posted earlier this morning regarding gender socialization issues. But you are right, I was also trying to make the point that men (as relates to this particular post, but obviously it applies to everyone) who evaluate their "attractiveness" as well as that of others according to what they are fed by the media and entertainment industries are going to have a much harder go at maintaining healthy relationships than what God (or nature) ever planned.
