I'm planning to watch "Dogma" on Christmas eve.

It's a great movie with Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Chris Rock, Salma Hayek, and other fine actors.

When the church boycotts a film, you just know it's a winner.

What are your plans for Christmas eve?

1. Follow up by watching "The Ref"
Housebreaker Denis Leary gets mixed up with an incredibly dysfunctional family at Christmastime. Hilarity ensues, and the scrumptious Christine Baranski has a small role. Highly recommended.

2. I'm going to Midnight Mass
after a dinner of beef stew and potato dumplings and trifle. We'll open some gifts that night because my son is a paramedic and is working Christmas Day, although he'll probably be stationed in our neighborhood and can hang out with us.

It is cold here today, in the 30's. We hope it stays cold for Christmas. Then we're quite fine with it going back into the 60's.

6. They still have Midnight Mass there?
It's hard to find a church that has one around here.

I'm going to watch "A Christmas Story" - and laugh like crazy again.

Pssst...it was -3 when I got up this morning. ;)

23. Gosh yeah

All the Catholic and Anglican and Episcopal churches still have them. I think also the Greek and Coptics do, but next week.

I love Jesus Buddy. Because sometimes everyone else DOES think I'm an asshole.

13. Until I saw George Carlin, I thought it was supposed to be a serious movie
(I guess I was confusing it with Stigmata).

Any movie with George Carlin as a priest/bishop/cardinal really has to be funny . . . and it was.

Silent Bob: "Shut up."

14. My former priest LOVED Dogma, and I liked it
Edited on Thu Dec-22-05 10:34 AM by Lydia Leftcoast
When I heard that Alanis Morrissette had been cast as God, I thought "Huh?" but it actually worked.

However, I'm booked up for Christmas Eve, singing a bunch of carols and choir anthems at my church's 11PM service.

Then I'll get up the next morning and sing more carols and anthems at the 10AM service, which my church wouldn't dream of canceling.

17. A recent post by Kevin Smith on 'Dogma 2'
So weird you should ask this, because ever since 9/11, I have been thinking about a sequel of sorts. I mean, the worst terrorist attack on American soil was religiously bent. In the wake of said attack, the leader of the "Free World" outed himself as pretty damned Christian. In the last election, rather than a quagmire war abroad, the big issue was whether or not gay marriage was moral.

Back when I made "Dogma", I always maintained that another movie about religion wouldn't be forthcoming, as "Dogma" was the product of 28 years of religious and spiritual meditation, and I'd kinda shot my wad on the subject. Now? I think I might have more to say.

And, yes - the Last Scion would be at the epicenter of it. And she'd have to be played by Alanis.
And we'd need a bigger budget - because the entire third act would be the Apocalypse.

Scary thing is this: the film would have to touch on Islam. And unlike the Cathloic League, when those cats don't like what you do, they issue a death warrant on yer ass (see Rushdie). And now that I've got a family, I'm not as free to stir the shit-pot as I was when I was single, back when I made "Dogma". I mean, now I've gotta think about more than my own safety and well-being.

But regardless - yeah, a "Dogma" followup's been swimming around in my head for some time now.

P.S. - Interesting "Dogma"-related sidebar: I recently received a glowing "Dogma"-praising email from a recent fan, who began his missive with "My name's Tom Clancy. I do books." It was surreal and really wonderful.

On Christmas Eve I'm going to watch "Muppet Family Christmas" which I finally tracked down on video.

19. Great movie, rare to see genuine faith represented.
Its kinda touching, the obvious genuine belief of Smith. Most movies are cynical, this one is not.

My priest loved it too, my wife and I had him over for dinner and watched it afterwards.

My father in law, also a priest, (episcopalian) loves it as well.

20. That's one of my all-time favorite movies
Love it!

I am going to a party with mistermonkey at my friends' house - they are loopy and wonderful and it should be a blast.

And on Christmas Day we are sleeping off our hangovers and then eating and chillin' around the house all day.

21. How about giving the channels and time they will run?
I did a search on my Dish Network and couldn't find Dogma. Sounds like something I will want to watch.
