is this too old for my 4 yr old??
My dad got him a really neat telescope for xmas that hooks up to your computer and you tell it what you want to look at and it rotates and points itself.

I got him this: http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/77aa/ hes the highly inquisitive type that wants/needs to know how things work. I just got it today and I played with it and I think he'll have a blast looking at things under it. I put my spit under it and ewwwwwww!!!!

2. Scientific curiousity is a great way for little kids to learn.
Go for it. I've loved microscopes ever since I can remember. Gee, I should buy that for myself. :)
