What was your best New Years Eve?
Mine was the Millenium. I spent it in DC. I stayed at the Youth Hostel and a whole bunch of people all around the world was there. We went to The Mall all together and had a blast. The whole week I was there a group of about 6-10 people was staying the same time. We did a lot of stuff together.
I also went to a lot of the museums and it was just wonderful. DC is a place I definitely want to see again.

Here is a picture of the group (and if I remember right, those weren't even all of them)

2. Ironically enough
considering the recent anniversary. It probably was when I was at a party and playing the trivia game that the local radio station did. It was a big deal with teams competing all over town. I had not been worth a darn to the team most of the night until the final question of the speed round which I slam-dunked. The question was "What book was the guy who shot John Lennon carrying?"

3. This is gonna sound a bit weird...
...since everybody's gonna talk about how much fun they had. But you said "best," and this is what comes to mind.

It was 1992, and I was at a party at a friend's house. Another friend had just gotten dumped and she was very upset, so she got ripped to shreds at the party. I drove her home and made sure she got inside, and... well, rejection, especially combined with alcohol, makes people do some strange things, I guess. So she propositioned me. And she was kind of urgent about it. I was tempted, but I thought, no — it'd be too weird, since we were friends and all. And besides, who wants to make love to a drunk?

So I made sure she was okay and politely excused myself. And I've never regretted it.

We're still friends, btw, even though she now lives near Seattle.

4. 1997, somewhere in Western Oregon (shhh, it's a secret).

I was eighteen, my h.s. friends were working inexplicably good tech jobs in Portland, and I was just getting over a bad first-semester-of-college break-up. Good, deliciously illegal alcohol, friendly friends who were still good to me and each other, nothing but blue skies ahead (or so I thought). The Democrats were in charge, Republicans were yet the ridiculed laughing stock of the foreseable political future, I had nothing to worry about but myself, and I actually did think most of my life's problems were over. That? Is actually the best night of my life. Which was fortunate, since I was about to enter the single blackest period of my entire existence just six short weeks later (non-resolving free-falling anxiety--don't catch it!). New Year's generally is my favorite holiday.

6. Mine was the millenium, too.
I went to NYC with my ex-roommate. Everyone was partying, but at the same time there was an underlying nervousness about the Y2K thing. But then midnight came and went, and nothing happened, so everyone just got really happy and drunk. :D

7. New Year's Eve 2001
I was the DJ for the restaurant's party. The regular DJ had a scheduling conflict (she wanted to hang out with her new husband), and I had prior experience. I had to borrow the equipment and learn how to set up everything. My brother was my roadie. As if that was not enough stress, I was sick that week and was getting over the flu. I had laryngitis and had lost my voice. Fortunately, I brought a stack of my own CDs (DJ rules: 1) Know your music. 2)Know your equipment. 3)Do not break Rules 1 and 2 at the same time.) I only had to call to ask where was "Auld Lang Syne." I had enough voice for the countdown. A great time was had by all!

but a good amount of 80's and 90's dance. I think that I threw in a few disco songs.

10. I was 25 when that happened
and so far I stayed the best NYE.

NYC two years later wasn't half as good. It was fun also, but differently.
It had something to do with the people who were together in DC. Gosh, the memories ...

Edited on Thu Dec-08-05 09:59 AM by bigwillq
I was in Philly with my best friend Megan. We went to Club Shampoo, where DJs Razor and Guido were spinning tracks. We were rolling our asses off and danced until like 6 a.m. :bounce:

1999 into 2000 was also cool. I was at my buddy's place up at Providence college. Drank a bottle of champagne just after midnight. Puked my ass off but it was a cool night!

14. Phish Big Cypress, Florida
We went down to Big Cypress in the HEART of the Everglades for a weekend of Phish, friends, and copious amounts of Gin & Tonics (with sides of whatever your pleasure may have been) and witnessed probably THE greatest event I have ever witnessed.

The band played "the midnight set" which began shortly before midnight, and culminated 7.25 hours later to THE greatest sunrise a man has ever witnessed in his life.

It was, do I say, almost a religious experience.

I am sure there were a DUer or two in attendance, so they know.

p.s. I'm never good with reviews.

15. So far it was last year
It was my first trip to San Francisco. A lot of my friends are living all over the country now, but last year about 15 of us mananaged to get to SF (where a few of them live) for a week of fun and debauchery. On New Year's I was at a house party, on my friend's porch without a jacket,(which I enjoyed since new year's here tends to mean it's 50 below or something ridiculous like that), looking over the city, drunk on booze and fun. We danced like maniacs, kissed a bunch of people at midnight, danced like maniacs in the street, stayed up laughing our heads off until 6 in the morning, passed out for a while, and then threw on some clothes from the floor, stumbled off to breakfast, and drank bloody marys and mimosas and beer all day while trying to piece together what the hell happened at the party.

So much fun. This year they're all coming here so this year should be a good one too.

20. Krakow, Poland, 1993
I was touring with the Duke Chapel choir, and we joined in the festivities outside in the freezing cold. People were lighting fireworks in the crowd, everyone was drinking and having a great time. Shortly after midnight, after the Auld Lang Syne, a few of my friends started singing "Happy Birthday" to me. Soon, everyone around, even the natives, joined it. It was wonderful! :loveya:

I heard Krakow is a beautiful city.

And it is usual that we light the fireworks ourselves. Everbody older than 18 is allowed to buy its own firweorks on New Years Eve and a couple of days before.

28. hehe okay
It was just the only NYE that I spent with the love of my life. Walking over to the stage and giving him a kiss at midnight was one of the most wonderful kisses ever.

Also, he was supposed to go to a concert later with his friends, go backstage, meet the band, etc. (him being a musician and them being a local band, this was a big deal to him) but instead he spent the night with me. Words can't express...

Everyone should experience this at least once. Thousands of people camped out on the sidewalks for the Tournament of Roses Parade. It's a huge outdoor party.

30. Usually when we go and see my mom's side of the family on NYE
My cousin hosts a party at her house which she invites all the immediate family and some of her close friends. There's a lot of talking, dancing, fun and partying to be had and we usually have immense fun. So when I've been at her place I've had the most fun on NYE

But probably the best NYE I've had was the milennium one in 1999-2000, which was also at a cousin's place. The whole family (with the exception of one cousin) was there and, while the occasion was bittersweet because we had lost a beloved uncle that year, it was still good to be in the company of family and good friends at the dawn of a new milennium. I remember we all held hands and sang "Auld Lang Syne" at midnight 2000 and some bright spark in my family turned off all the lights on the stroke of 12 -a humourous allusion to the Milennium Bug

And I agree MissHoneychurch -I want to go to DC again as well
