why is it such a pain in the ass for my computer to open up PDF docs?
and it happens on both my desktop and laptop, they both are new computers with broadband connections and they both have the latest versions of Adobe reader on them. So why is it that every time I try and open a PDF off of a website my browser freezes up and I have to control-alt-delete. Sometimes if I'm patient enough the document will open up but I usually have to wait at least 5 minutes for it. What gives?

btw I'm running Firefox 1.0.7, not IE

1. Uninstall Adobe then reinstall it. Then see if that works.

2. The newest version of Adobe Reader is slooooooooow.
I assume it's got a ton of unnecessary bells and whistles.

And it leaves things running even after you've closed it.

I long ago tired of new-and-improved just about anything.

~old fogey, I am.

6. Try this. Do you know how to adjust Virtual Memory, or the Page File?

13. I assume you have XP. Click on Start - Control Panel - System.

Click on the Advanced tab.
In the top section under Performance click Settings.
Click the Advanced tab at the bettom you will see Virtual Memory and click on Change.

Here's a Screenshot!!

If you have more than one hard drive click on the one you use to start up the computer. Then click the Custom Size button. Change the Initial Size to what ever the Recommended size is as stated further down the dialog box. Set the Maximum size to say 2000. Then click Set and Ok.

You won't have to reboot your system but you may want to anyways. See if this works.

On Edit: If the problem still occurs try a different website and see if that's any different and try the same site with Internet Explorer.

8. Any computer I've used to open PDFs...
...seems to at least 'hiccup' before any PDF file actually opens.

It's like they weren't really meant to be. Plus, they're awkward to navigate. I hate them.

11. Firefox totally sucks with non-standard formats, like PDF, or WMV
still, download, 1.5

12. My Two Cents
I have downloaded a lot of .pdf files. Some come quickly, some seem to never come.

I have come to the conclusion that, when it takes forever, it is because the server sending me the document is slow or screwed up. The fault is not with my computer or my software.

You just have to be patient.

15. I dumped that resource hog Adobe
and now use the Foxit Reader. Nice small prog for viewing and printing PDF files. I also use Firefox.
