1. DJ supply stores
You can get a decent turntable for $100 or less from DJ supply outfits. Just type DJ supply into google and you'll get a zillion hits.

2. How much you want to spend?
for an inexpensive audiophile table do a search for the Musichall series. Great price for very good sound.

20. I dunno. I already have a spare receiver.
I have some long playing 45s, and I need something to play them on.

I really don't want to go over $150.

3. Here, try thses guys...

They have stuff from under $100 to over $500. I haven't purchased a turntable from them, but I did buy a cartridge for my 25 year old turntable a couple years ago.

Disclaimer: this is not an endorsement or recommendation, I just know they sell turntables.

4. The cost range is huge.
From less than $100 for and ok player, around $700 for one with no wow or flutter to $10,000 for a catridgeless-laser model (works like a cd player, laser reads groves).
External pre-amps range from $40-300.

14. The range is a little wider than that
Top quality phono preamplifiers range up to the $30K point. The Finial laser turntable is about $25,000. I haven't heard it, but wouldn't spend the money even if I had it. Unproven technology with only one manufacturer. Stick with the tried and true.

Some fine phono preamos include the Manley Labs Steelhead ($7500)

the Aesthetix Rhea ($4500)

the Audio Research PH5 ($1995)

and the ultra luxe Boulder 2008 ($32,000)

For under $2K one can put together a turntable (table, arm, cartridge) that makes the standard commercial stuff sound like grunge.

My system (over $2K):

Turntable (Oracle Delphi Mark V):

Tonearm (Graham 2.2):

Cartridge (Benz Micro Ruby 3):

Phono preamp (Audio Research PH3 SE):

6. Do you have a Guitar Center nearby?
They sell a solid Stanton model for $100. Or you could look for a Sony at Best Buy.

Looks and feels extremely cheap too; I dare say it would be worth, maximum, $49.

9. You can get turntables at a DJ supply store
However if you do go that route, make sure that you change out the needle before you play your vinyl on it. Turntables these days are made for scratching, and thus the needle they use is oval shaped rather than cone shaped. This prevents excessive track jumping when you're scratching, but is not the optimum shape for good quality sound.

Also, you can buy used ones on Ebay or other such places. Look for Technics or Bang and Olufson brands, as they have tended to age much better than others IMHO.

11. Try The Needle Doctor
I'm too lazy to google it, but I know they have a website and sell turntables and cartridges at all price points from the affordable to what non-audiophiles consider crazy (i.e., thousands of dollars). Pro-Ject is a solid brand at low cost (couple hundred bux). I know whereof I speak - I review audio equipment for a well known High End audio magazine.

This is my analog baby, the SOTA Cosmos Series III vacuum turntable:

$5700 minus arm and cartrige. Hand built in yummy oiled rosewood finish. VINYL RULES!

E&J electronics usually takes a full page out at the back of one of the sections. They stock top notch turntables, needles and preamps at a great price. That is where i got one I salivated over years ago.
It do sound great.

25. Try Turntable Lab...Depends what you want to do with it...
Edited on Fri Dec-02-05 08:26 PM by primate1
If you just want something for listening to records, you won't have to drop tremendous amounts of money, but if you want it for the purpose of DJing (scratching or mixing) you'll want something high end like Technics 1200 or Numark TTX1, which will cost between $400-500.

30. I bought one at an electronics shop recently
Best buy? It cost about $120 for a cheap piece of plastic that would probably sell for $29 at Walmart, if there were more demand.
