(NOT a copycat!) How many guys would let a guy massage them?
That other post reminded me of something...I had a trainer/therapeutic massage guy working on my shoulder and back over the summer, and he told me that there are quite a few (heterosexual, I suppose he means, because he is and so am I) guys who won't hire a guy to work on them.

I don't understand why they wouldn't.

Your thoughts / opinions, please?

1. It reminds me of that Seinfeld when George thought
he'd get a hot girl to massage him and it ended up being a guy!

2. Well, I'm not a guy, but I don't see what the problem would be.
There is nothing erotic or sexual about a therapeutic massage, so I'm not sure why they'd be concerned about it.

6. Yeah, but in my case it was good that guys weigh more...
It took him six weeks to get a knot out of my back near the shoulder blade, and he had to essentially stand on his elbow (if you can picture that) to do it.

He actually gave me a couple of free sessions because he said he'd never met a knot he couldn't release before, and wasn't going to let mine make a fool of him.

11. I remember working a knot out of a friend's neck
It was like 3 pancakes on top of each other, right between the shoulder blades. I told her that life was gonna suck for the next hour or so, while I drove my thumbs right through the middle of it, just to break it into pieces ( if you will ). Worked on it for about 2 hrs straight, and after it was sufficiently split up, it sort of released itself. What a monster.

12. Sometimes you need a really strong masseuse to work out problem areas
Other times you need a more relaxing touch. When I have a sports injury, it almost always requires the former.

I've never thought anything of it at all. I think some people don't understand that a therapeutic massage is more akin to a medical procedure than a sexual activity.

Just asking; I'm not sure what you meant.

And if you wouldn't, I'm not going to argue with you; I'd just like to hear your reason.

nothing wrong with, I just don't like that much touching. I don't even really hold hands and stuff in public with my wife. I am a person who does not like people touching me.

9. never had a problem with it,
but here you're talking about professional massage therapy...big difference. Like I said in that other thread, I don't think I'd just let some dude give me a rubdown.

My problem is I can't afford to get professional massages...I don't think my insurance will cover it for treatment of residual pain from old, old injuries.

14. Try to scrape up the money. It's just the thing for old injuries because
someone who's good will be able to break up old scar-tissue inclusions, and that helps a ton.

And, no, I wouldn't be looking for another guy to give me a "friendly rubdown" either; and I don't think it's homophobic for heterosexual guys to say that.

(Disclaimer: If anyone her knows me at all, they know I don't tell other people what to do; whatever you want to do is fine with me. So if you are a guy of any persuasion, and you like the idea of a "friendly rubdown" from another guy, be my guest.)

Nobody gets any criticism from me on this one; I asked for opinions, and will respect all of them.

I'd be the guys my masseur was talking about wouldn't go to a FEMALE physician.

'Course, a lot of men won't go to a female doctor. Never bothered me to do so.

21. Guess you do; wouldn't matter to me if I went to a male doctor
who was gay, or a female who was a lesbian; all I care about is if they're good. Oh, and also if they're not too eager to get out the scalpel.

Actually, the second consideration is the most important one for me.

23. That's the thing
She is good. I started seeing her because my then-S.O. was her office manager, so I got a discount. (Didn't have insurance at the time.) When my S.O. no longer worked for her, I continued to see her, and through until now, when I live 30 miles from her office.

She's a D.O., not an M.D., so she's recommended some good holistic supplements for me and does stuff like Osteopathic Manipulation Therapy and even acupuncture. And, more than anything else, I feel like she really cares about me.

I admit it's fun in a "look how liberal I am" way to tell people my doctor's a lesbian, but the bottom line is she's a damned good doctor.

26. Osteopaths are damn good doctors, in my opinion.
I had one who figured out that I had a torn muscle in my side; a pain that had kept me (literally) from being able to stand up for more than three minutes or so, for over five years.

And he got the answer in four visits or so. Treated me with MASSIVE amounts of Bute and methacarbamol which made me sick as a dog but worked after a couple of weeks.

That guy was a the best doctor I've ever known, and he was an Osteopath.

17. If you
think of a massage as something remotely 'sexual', you might want to look for something that's called 'Tantra massage' in the yellow pages.

I never had any problem with a guy massage me.

31. It's misplaced homophobia
Having another guy touch you like that is icky and somehow queer. Same thing with women who'd rather slit their own throats than see a female gyn/ob (I know a few).

It's stupid. These are professionals - they are (statistically) probably straight and the last thing on their minds is sex. It's work.

32. Most women I know DEMAND a female ob/gyn.
But then again, I know a lot of strong feminists....

Anyway, as for the homophobia part of it, I'm sure it is in many cases. I certainly would not break out the broad brush however and paint anyone who just doesn't feel comfortable with a particular gender touching them. There are other factors in play too. This said as a heterosexual guy who's had professional male massages and male physical therapists.

35. Any sensible woman would.
But I disagree with you Vash on the homophobia part. I think that accounts for the vast majority of it (Sure individual people have individual issues - if one had been molested as a child one would feel very uncomfortable having anyone of the same gender as the molestor touch
them in anyway that could be considered remotely intimate).

Why would someone not feel comfortable with a particular gender touching them? If we leave out sincere psychological issues like the one I mentioned above - we get down to homophobia or outright sexism.

Personally, Im much more interested in a person's professional skill than their gender. Sounds like you feel the same way. Which is great, I wish more heterosexual guys felt that way.

Khash.

36. You're probably right.
I just don't like to use broad brush "truths" unless I'm absolutely sure, which I'm not in this case. I think it cheapens the term. Of course, I can't come up with any real alternatives in this case, being that I personally don't have much of a problem with it. So I guess I'll just leave it at "I dunno, you're probably right". :-)

33. For a deep tissue massage, I prefer a masseur.
We have a guy that comes to our house with his massage table and works on both my wife and I. He's a big, body builder type and the strength of his hands definitely makes a difference.

I've had a good deep tissue massages from men and women but none as "penetrating" as those from the body builder guy. Maybe it's his talent and experience but I really think hand strength matters.

This is of course strictly therapeutic, no "happy endings". (at least not until he leaves and my wife and I are alone)

I have friends who shudder at the thought of a man touching them that much but I suspect that maybe they're afraid that they'll like it more than they want to admit.

37. Have been massaged by male and female professional massage-persons
Only a few times by each because it is too damn expensive, and frankly, the effect doesn't last long enough to be really therapeutic. A good hot whirlpool bath and proper exercise does much better and vastly cheaper.

The woman was the best because her technique was better, that's all.
