:bounce:

I'm lucky ... I get to see many Broadway musicals - but I always dread the movie versions because Hollywood never fails to screw them up! Movie studios love big names, expensive sets and overblown productions. They lose site of the things that made people fall in love with a musical in the first place, such as characters that we can relate to, a compelling story and the "intimacy" of the production, which allows the audience to feel the show, instead of just watching it.

But "Rent" has managed grow beyond the stage while maintaining all the intimacy and passion of the Broadway version. It's GREAT! Six of the original eight cast members are in the movie (it was wonderful to see them all together again) and Chris Columbus, who directed the film, obviously "gets" what the play is about. He understands the material and that made a HUGE difference in the way the film looks and feels, compared to other movie versions of Broadway musicals.

Anyway, if you always wanted to see "Rent" but couldn't afford the trip to NYC, go see the movie. It really is the next best thing to seeing it live! :-)

1. But but but, you're Batty, what could you know?
:loveya::loveya::loveya:

It has to be better than live. It probably cost under 10 bucks and lasted longer without having to pay for parking too.:evilgrin:

2. LOL!
I take it you didn't like the live show? ;-) Oh well ... most people I know either love it or hate it - there's no in between. And yes ... the $6.75 (matinee price) I paid was WELL worth it, even though it was about a half hour shorter than the 2 hour and 45 minute stage version. However, the popcorn and soda cost me almost as much as the parking did in NYC! :evilgrin:

3. Agreed. I was nervous because I consider one of the best musicals
ever so I watched it with reservation. I left the movie stunned that he did such a good job. I went back and saw it second time and can see a lot of little changes (as well as some obvious big changes) but the "idea" of the production is there.
AWESOME!

5. It was awesome.
Can't wait for the DVD. My friend played Collins on Broadway and we went to see him and followed the show all over the world. The movie does it justice and my friends who didn't see the show were very moved.
