So, I was bartending a Christmas Party tonight...
Edited on Sun Nov-20-05 05:55 AM by enigmatic
.....and it's packed, and the hotel has been a madhouse all day and night; an absolute zoo. I've been there since 7am, and I know I wasn't going to get home before 2am (actually, I just got home about 40 minutes ago), so I'm a more than a little punch-drunk.

But the people are cool and tipping well, and the DJ is playing a few good songs inbetween the wedding reception/Christmas party standards ("Love Shack", YMCA, "Macarena"....), so it wasn't too bad a night so far.

Then the DJ puts on a song called "Wake Up", and the crowd of women flock the dance floor and go to town dancing away, and while I'm serving drinks, I'm listening and tapping my foot. "This is a pretty nice song" I say to myself; "peppy and frothy, but fun" and it has a killer hook to boot. So the song ends, and "Electric Slide" comes on, but I've still got this song in my head.....

The DJ comes over and gets a drink, and I ask him about that song, and a smirk comes over his face:

"That's Hillary Duff, man!"

So it's almost 4am here and I'm listening to that Hillary Duff song on my headphones, and questioning my impeccable cool music cred that I've built up over my life and wondering if I'm having some kind of middle-aged musical crisis or something...

I need a beer:)

I know, I know; age 22, I'm playing in post-punk bands and hanging out w/ Pere Ubu; age 42, and I'm singing along to a Hillary Duff song. My God, what's happened to me?:)

4. Who the hell has Christmas parties before Thanksgiving?
Edited on Sun Nov-20-05 06:06 AM by Hissyspit
Hey, a good song is a good song. Even a bad song can be a good song. Some bad songs are good songs in the right context.

I watched "The ABBA Movie" on Bravo the other night. It's a terrible movie... and great fun.

6. Up here in Canada
We have our Thanksgiving in October, so by November the Christmas party season is in full swing...

You're right, though; I've never heard a Hillary Duff in my life until tonight and I was just taken aback, I guess:)

9. Oh, yeah. I knew Canadian Thanksgiving was earlier. Pardon my...
nationocentrism. I assumed... and we know what happens when you assume.

Dayum! Why so early?

Don't worry, enigmatic. At 4 am, while drunk, I like ALL music. ;)

14. I've had it happen, too
Just chalk it up to a momentary weakness.

I love alt country, alt rock, edgy, heavy metal, opera, rap, but I can just get giddy over some British Pop, and it is sometimes hard to explain...

20. I've experienced that.
I actually used to work those events. I remember seeing the electric slide thing and was freaked out. A bunch a boring people standing around drinking. All of a sudden this song comes on and they spring to life. Weird.
For the record, musically I have a similar background. I found myself liking Kelli Clarkson (american idol). I didn't even know who she was, but liked the song. My wife thought that was cool. I could just like something for what is was.
I am more open to listening to stuff now, I was kind of boxed in by
my taste before.Lifes short.

21. oh man, I used to listen to Mandy Moore
when she first came out. My roommate in Seattle downloaded one of her songs. I didn't really know who she was, I mean I am a farmhick from Montana, and I kind of liked it. In spite of myself anyway. Then one time I asked one of my friend's to burn me a CD and just to put a bunch of good music on it. Just said: "Go ahead and pick whatever." Well, he asked me if I liked Mandy Moore, and I said, "yeah, she's alright." So, like the next week, I should mention this guy was a bit backward and he really loved young girls, he comes over with a cd of all Mandy Moore songs burned for me, haha. He even brought me a Mandy Moore poster, lol. So my little brothers used to tease me about that cd. The truth is, it wasn't all that bad. A few songs were pretty good. Plus, she is a good solid liberal, so that's cool. Still though. It hurt my tough guy rep. :)

24. Most of Hillary Duff's songs don't totally suck.
I'll admit, I've even got at least one audio and video "bootleg" audience recording of her. The songs are pretty good.

32. Got to give props to Lindsay Lohan too!
I don't know a lot about her music, and I've only seen Herbie Fully Loaded of her movies, (Hey I'm from Indianapolis, I like racing movies any kind) she's an ok actress from just seening this disney movie, I must say I think she really has the girl next door look that is absolutely wonderful change from what hollywood is use to. That is till she starved herself and bleach her red hair blonde. :puke:

Just for the record if anyone cares, I'm not some 40 year old drooling over a 19 year old girl, I'm only 24 doing it .

31. I really want to cover this song now
throw some more chrunchy guitars w/ a little feedback on top of everything else, but of course, I don't know how convincing I'd sound singing the lyrics of an 18 year old girl lamenting her jet-set lifestyle:)
