College Football Rivalry Weekend
College football fans, lets talk about your rivalry game.

I'm a Duck at heart and look forward to the "Civil War" all year. Its held in Eugene this weekend. Many years this game has just been for bragging rights. Neither school was in the national picture the last two season. This year it matters quite a bit for the Ducks as far as the national picture is concerned. Currently ranked 10, unless the Ducks win and get some help, Oregon will have little chance to get into a BCS bowl. In addition to the Oregon-Oregon State game, the "Iron Bowl" and the Michigan - OSU game are important for me. OSU has a task at Michigan (never fun to go into Michigan in November) and the Bama-Auburn is always one of the best games of the year. If either OSU or Bama loses, the Ducks should move into the top 8 or 9 and may well get a Fiesta Bowl spot.

What about your favorite rivalry? Any traditions you'd like ot share?

1. Texas/OU at the State Fair in Dallas
Edited on Thu Nov-17-05 11:50 AM by ThruTheLookingGlass
Also called the Red River Shootout, I believe it's the only rivalry played in a neutral venue every year. Half the stadium is Orange, half red and it's war. A great game, and the atmosphere of the fair and the fact it's the whole weekend makes it like no other. Hook 'em Horns!!!

Edit to add: My 800th post! No more 700 club.

3. I did not know it was on a neutral ground
That is great. The home team has won the Oregon v. Oregon State game each of the last ten years or so. Based on their recent play, I would not give Michigan a chance over OSU, but with the game in Ann Arbor, all bets are off. That home field advantage is worth gold. A true neutral venue would be something to see. That sounds cool. I bet it is the only rivalry game like that, I have never heard of another.

80. that is a fantastic game and a fantastic weekend
The game itself is great enough, but throw in a Friday night in the west end with the rival fans staking claim to various establishments, or the "walk of shame" for the fans of the losing team through the midway of the state fair after the game is over ... what a great tradition.

the last few years, too, it seems like it's become a more sporting rivalry, too--still a fierce matter of pride and all, but not quite as mean-spirited as it sometimes was in the past ...

13. Duck girl here!
And I love the Civil War, especially when there is more at stake than bragging rights, as you say.

My favorite memory is from years ago. The game was in Corvallis that year, and the Ducks were absolutely humiliating the Beavers. I don't remember the score, but it was completely lopsided. Where I was sitting there was a good mix of Duck and Beaver fans. There was a guy sitting a couple of rows below me. and he kept yelling, "It's a fucking rout! It's a fucking rout!" He was yelling and whistling, louder and louder. After the 3rd or 4th "It's a fucking rout!", someone just above me yelled out, "Yeah, I remember when I had my first beer too!" We all burst out laughing. It was great.

17. Hey SeattleGirl
Go DUCKS! Thats a pretty cool story. They are usually close games. It is at Autzen, the loudest place on earth, so the Ducks should have an advantage. Even though the Ducks are 50x better than the Beavers this year, I've seen the Ducks lose too many Civil Wars when they were the better team.

Haven't been to a game there is several years. Last two I went to were against the Huskies. Had standing-room-only tickets, but I didn't even notice how long I had to stand, I was so into the game.

I am pretty impressed with the Ducks this year, and that Dixon kid who had to step in when Clemens broke his ankle has done a good job; so has Leaf. I was a bit worried when Clemens couldn't play any more, but so far, so good (knock on wood!)

27. Me too
I was freaking out when Clements went down. I thought we would lose to Cal and then to Wash St. The Dixon kid is fast and strong, but I worry about his arm strength. He tried to hurl it down the field a few times and it kind of hung up there. I did not get to see Leaf, so I will be watching this week. There is so much going on. If the Ducks win big and OSU beats Michigan and Auburn beats Bama, it is pretty likely we would get Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl. That would be sweet. If not, its either the Holiday Bowl or the Sun Bowl (I think the Holiday Bowl is a bigger pay day for the Ducks).

I am a traditionalist and I think New Years day is all about the Rose Bowl and the best Big-10 team playing the west Pac-10 team. Its Power football v. west coast offense. It is just great football. Michigan v. USC, Oregon v. Penn State, UCLA v. OSU ... That is the Rose Bowl.

I miss those days. The Rose Bowl was truly the granddaddy of the bowls, then. Now it's really just like all the others. If they aren't going to go to a playoff system, they should go back to the way they did it before instead of this rotation system.

37. Aren't they going back next year?
I heard that next year they are adding the national title game the following week. I don't know how the four BCS bowls will award games, but I assume the Rose Bowl will go back to Pac-10 v. Big-10, unless one of the conference champions are in the national title, then they get to fill in with at large bids. Of course If I was the Rose Bowl and I had USC in the title game this year, I would rather have Oregon or UCLA play Michigan, OSU or Penn State then some other at large schools.

I knew you must be there, 'cause I didn't see you on DU. It looked awesome on tv.

I know not everyone is obnoxious, but my brothers are AWFUL!!!!

And I know lots of Bama fans who are, too.

I did see something so funny on tv this morning. The local news did a report on fans' superstitions. They talked to a woman who wears the same underwear every Iron Bowl day. On the front it says, "What do you want?" and on the back it says, "TOUCHDOWN!!!" They also showed people who decorate their houses the same every year, eat the same foods every year, and even some guys who have been doing their own special "high five/handshake" on game days for 20 years.

There were two guys who always tie a stuffed version of their opponents' mascot behind a golf cart and drag it around the parking lot before the game! That made me laugh so hard. They were old guys!

42. On the BCS
The BCS is the best plan I've seen yet. What would you prefer. I would rather a tourney, but a tourneyment just won't work with the schools so dependent on bowl money to keep athletics afloat. The big conference presidents also will not let a 14-15 game schedule, but I think it has more to do with bowl money than care for students.

I'm not sure what else will work. The old way sucked, because small conference schools never had a chance and the best two schools would never play each other. In the 1990s alone three years had that co-champion bullshit because the bowl allignment kept the best teams from playing each other.

Next year there are two more at-large spots, one of which will go to non-bcs conference schools ranked in the top 12. I think schools like TCU or Fresno State will have no problem qualifying for these spots, especially since they are getting better non-conference opponents as their programs gain respect. If any smaller conference champ beats an LSU or a Penn State in a BCS bowl game, other small conference schools would benefit. Also, I think the Big East will lose a BCS spot sooner or later, unless they increase the level of football investment at their schools.

What else would you like to see?

53. I prefer that there is no set champion
I don't think there is a need for it. I liked it how it was just prior to the BCS. The way it was before, 28 teams went home happy (and there were plenty of smaller bowls.) Who cares if there are co-champs? What in the world is wrong with that, LOL? So fans from two schools are happy and the ensuing arguments make for a lively off season. I guess the winner-take-all mentality just doesn't appeal to me.

39. Ultimate Ivy: Yale-Harvard
Back in the late 80s/early 90s my future son-in-law was at Yale and we went to a couple of the Y-H games, including the famous 100 year anniversary match.

I saw then V-P G.H.W. Bush there.
Woopee.

It was also the ultimate, no-holds-barred, don't-spare-the-horses tailgating experience of my life. Folks began to arrive at a huge open field next to the Yale Bowl before sunrise to get the best spots.

One group set up a banquet table with silver candelabra, roast pheasant, oysters, champagne, etc., AND liveried servants. We chatted with them, complimenting them on their set up and learned that the "servants" were part of the group of friends.

But I'll be glued to the Alabama-Auburn game tomorrow.

I wish I could be at that game, too. I've been following Oregon State all season, but have another little college rivalry to focus on down in Alabama this weekend!

59. I was just at my kids' school and the school secretary
had her office decked out with Ducks stuff. But, I saw OSU fight song lyrics printed out in the supply room. I like the Ducks, but my kids like the Beavers because a camp counselor taught them some Beaver cheer. "Beaver one, Beaver two, let's all do what Beavers do..."

In any case, GO CAL BEARS!

65. This is a BIG rivalry weekend around here.
I have nothing invested in either team, apart from the fact that my sister and BIL graduated from University of Idaho, but the U of I Vandals are playing the Boise State Broncos at BSU tomorrow afternoon.

People are RABID Broncos fans around here, and the BSU/U of I rivalry is extremely heated.

would I think the Hawkeyes could do that. Not with a Gopher team with that good an offense. I know on the radio broadcast the Iowa commentators were talking about how much this team looked very close to the 2002 team in terms of dominating the opposition.

86. GREAT WEEKEND
Some upsets, some great games, and lots of fun. I loved that OSU - Michigan game, even though it would have helped the Ducks more if Michigan pulled it out. Reggie Bush is a great back and should be the No. 1 pick and the Heisman winner.

The Ducks won 56-14 and should get consideration for the Fiesta Bowl, but with OSU beating Michigan, it may go to them. Either way, it wa a great weekend and a good cap to a 10-1 season for my Ducks.
