Cuban Woman Who Shipped Herself To U.S. In Crate Allowed To Stay
<snip>

MIAMI -- A Cuban woman who traveled to Miami as a stowaway in a DHL crate can stay in the United States.

Sandra De los Santos has been granted political asylum.

In August 2004, De los Santos tucked herself in a wooden crate on a cargo flight from the Bahamas. A crew unloading the filing cabinet-size crate found her.

During the flight, De los Santos remained in a fetal position for six hours, while temperatures in the plane at times dropped to freezing levels.

De los Santos was a law student in Cuba. She said she is studying English and hopes to become an ultrasound technician.
