Have you now, or have you ever
owned a Volkswagen Bug?

I'm not talking the new Beetles. I'm talkin' the old-school-all-you-need-is-a-screwdriver-and-a-rubber-band-to-get-it-running Bugs.

I had a '77 in 1990. Awesome...until I totalled it. When I was in high school you could get a running used Bug for under $1000, there were always dozens in the paper, and if it broke, you just needed to kick it a few times.

The original Beetle could very well be the Greatest Car Ever.

2. I never owned one, but

7. I've owned two. I forget the years exactly but
one was a 65 I think and the other a 73 I think. Got both of them used. the 65 threw a rod on the number 3 cylinder a few months after I bought it. No problem, pulled the engine, replaced the cylinder and piston assembly and drove it a couple more years.

THe 73 I bought from my older sister. It served me well for a couple of years. Gave it to my younger sister who let her friend named "Maniac" drive it and he somehow sheared the torque converter Right off the flywheel. Don't know what happened to that one.

I am currently looking for VW Passat Wagon in diesel to do a vegetable oil conversion on.

In the 70's.

But before that, I drove one of these:

9. What year is that Bug?
The vents say...early 60's?

And shame on you for rubbing in your I-had-a-vintage-Chevy-pimpmobile-with-whitewalls picture.

10. My first car
was a 74 powder blue semi-automatic (stick shift, no clutch!)

LOVED IT.

Mint condition, too (and, surprisingly, stayed that way!).

12. My dad bought one to take to Alaska when we moved there...
he bought it on Guam and had it shipped to Adak, Alaska. That little car would go through anything!! It really was amazing. My dad said that he would see cars in snow banks, but the bug just kept cruising along!
