I have a true story that will creep you out.
So a good friend came back from San Antonio recently, where he was doing emergency medical work for hurricane victims.

OK, so maybe it was a few weeks ago. Not "recently," exactly. Anyhow.

He described a woman he treated for a facial boil. She had been evacuated a week previous and hadn't had medical care for nearly two weeks. She winds up in my friend's little area, and he plops down to go to work on the boil.

Upon inspection, it turns out to be a large spider bite on her cheek, inflamed to about the size of the palm of your hand. Brown recluse, he suspects. So he goes to open it up, as all the flesh inside is rotting away, needs to be scraped out, and so on.

Here it comes. Turn back now if you're squeamish.

A mixture of about a hundred eggs and tiny spiders came gushing out.

EEEEWEWWWWWWEWEWEWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. Brown recluse....
nasty little f*ckers. I posted my own lovely experience with them not five minutes ago in the centipede/houseguest thread. We had centipedes...and were thrilled when the little bastards disappeared until we ended up with Recluse instead.

3. That wasn't too bad.......I was expecting a picture!
Still, it was gross, so thanks for the warning.....

I'll bet the lady who had those in her face was really grossed out...

Unless she wasn't told.....whew!

I'll just bet she's on antibiotics (or was) for that......

Great story, BTW, even if it is a little much.....

4. Jeez, yeah, I'm not sure I'd want to know that
I'd rather have them fix me up, give me my prescription and send me on my merry and blissfully ignorant way.

5. Brown recluse spiders do not lay eggs into the wounds of their victims.

7. Has the sound of an urban legend to me
never heard of spiders doing this and the bite is a true bite not a modified egg laying aparratus like wasps and bees so I am having a little trouble believing this - it would be so rare as to be a case to write a paper on - what was the species, did he take samples etc etc etc...

8. Yeah, urban legend. Spiders lay eggs in dry little sacs...
Sounds nasty though.

10. lol the urban legends are visible from hundreds of miles away, aren't they
?

I actually had a spider's egg hatch on my bed when I was a kid. I'd collected some rocks in Pennsylvania while camping. Brought em home, was looking at them while sitting on my bed.

Saw a shiny beige silver papery spot with bumps on it on one, it was smaller than a dime, kind of poked it, set it down... Turned away and next thing I know there WERE hundreds of tiny little blackspiders flowing out of it, all over my bed; the stuff of nightmares.

Went downstairs and trying not to pass out, alerted the parents who doused the offending creatures with plenty of bug spray.

*shivers with gross-out*
