My family and I recently moved to a burb where Verizon is the carrier instead of QWest, who used to provide the DSL bandwidth. Now I have Verizon DSL, and I have to say I'm a little bit ticked at their service. Through a feat of great persistence and courage, we were able to keep our local ISP, which we know & love. However.
The sales rep was probably trying to push you towards using Verizon as the ISP. See, that's one way a lot of carriers can make a buck now: first they tag you with the broadband physical layer charges, then they double dip when you end up going to them as an ISP. Unless you've had DSL before, going to your carrier to find out if local ISPs can contract with them for broadband services is a bad idea.
Then, their DSL apparently has to use a different link protocol so I had to use (crappy) new hardware they sent instead of my reliable old Cisco.
But the worst thing about Verizon is the runaround we get with their phone menus and operators. Aargh! They must target hiring for somewhere between Rude and Stupid, with bonus points for Nutty and Incoherent. And their billing dept... don't get me started about them.
The guys at my ISP were also pretty short fused about Verizon stuff. I mean, if I had it bad, they actually have to deal with Verizon as a peer in shared support contracts. Ick!
