1. I don't have a pitcure but it was a 1966 Ford Falcon
My parents bought it for me for my 1973 high school graduation for $50. Dad was a whiz with cars, and got it in great running order. I ended up selling it for $100 when I moved to Texas!

14. When I was a kid, we had neighbors who had this model RX-7...
Edited on Wed Oct-26-05 01:54 AM by colinmom71
Yeah, it was a nice, beautiful car!! Theirs was black and sleek..

Unfortunately, said neighbors experienced a house fire less than a year after buying the car that was caused by an explosion of the water heater in the storage area of their car port. The car *literally* MELTED into the concrete because of the fiberglass siding the car was composed of.

Still, I've always liked Mazdas. I tried (unsuccessfully) to convince my mother to buy a Mazda Millennia a while back. My husband now owns a blue Miata that I affectionately call the "Mid-Life Crisis Mobile", which is just too cute for words. Come to think of it, the Miata does somewhat resemble the older RX-7 models a bit... Hmmm.... ;-)

Edited on Wed Oct-26-05 02:35 AM by aint_no_life_nowhere
By the way, I LOVE your Triumph. I have a thing for old cars.

When I started making money in college as a teaching assistant in graduate school, I sold the MGA and bought a 1960 Jaguar Mark II 3.8 sedan. Now THAT was a car. Very fast, very beautiful, and surprisingly reliable. I paid $1800 for it used. It was exactly this color and it had the same magnificent wire wheels:

After owning a series of new cars, I have returned to the oldies. I now have two old cars, in case one has to spend some time at the mechanic's shop for things I cannot fix. One is a 1973 Saab Model 96 and the other is a 1969 Citroen DS 21.

9. 1999 Ford Contour
Edited on Wed Oct-26-05 01:40 AM by Ally McLesbian
Bought it new, for its European driving character. Turned out to be total piece of junk. Support from Ford has been pathetic. Now it won't even pass emissions, and registration has just expired as a result.

It didn't help having an owner club full of right-wing a**holes. They've officially claimed the car to be "The Conservative Man's BMW." (In other words, women and liberals shouldn't even apply.) But then, I should've known that Ford is the right wing's favorite car company.

I leased a real BMW in the meantime last year. Now gay rights activists are yelling at me because Ford offers domestic partner benefits and BMW doesn't.

Honorary mention here would be a 1989 Toyota Corolla, which, while not mine, was my father's - and my driver's ed car. My sister totalled it in a DUI accident in 1997.

10. 1984 Honda Prelude...
And it was a complete POS!!! Cute and sporty, with a moonroof and nice stereo system, but that car taught me that Honda's reputation was terribly over-hyped... The damn thing was a total lemon the entire 2 1/2 years I owned it.

My next car would be a custom ordered 1992 Ford Escort GT, and it lasted 8 years with no major problems at all! I sooo miss that car!

Shortly after the kid came along, a 1996 Ford Taurus wagon replaced my beloved Escort, which has also been relatively problem free since we bought it. It's still running great and is a very comfortable car for both errands and road trips to grandma's...

23. '78 Pontiac Grand Prix
Last of the big land sharks. (I got it as a hand-me-down in '87)

It was navy blue with a light blue vinyl top cover that was peeling off and started flapping loudly when I got above 30. It left puddles underneath it in three different colors everywhere I parked. It had those vinyl seats that make the embarrassing fart noises when you get in if you've got any bare skin. It got the gas mileage of a Hummer. It had no AC or tape deck--I used to keep one of those old flat tape recorders on the seat next to me.

But it was a CAR, and I LOVED it. I used it for my Domino's Pizza delivery job.

I also sometimes drove my parents' '73 Dodge pickup truck with the camper top. That was even huger, and I called it the Zeppelin because it handled like one. It was frighteningly light for its size and just about anti-aerodynamic, which is not good when you live in a windy mountainous region.

Edited on Wed Oct-26-05 07:10 AM by kwassa
Cost me $125. 1965 Mustang with quite a bit of body rot, bought in 1975 to get me to a summer job. Lasted a couple of years.

Great car, every time something broke it literally cost $10 to fix. The battery went dead, and I started it for quite awhile by rolling it down any slight hill and popping it into gear.

Towards the end, the leaf springs came right up through the rotted trunk floor, and the floor also fell out on the passenger side front seat, to be covered by a board.

It was finally towed away for unpaid parking tickets.

by then I had a classy Vega wagon.

here is a '65 Mustang of the same color with no rust:

It had been my grandparents. I got it painted and the front straightened out (my little brother had rear-ended someone at the beach) and then my little brother backed into it and folded the bumper over the hood latch. My parents didn't think he should have to get it fixed.

I took it in to get worked on one time and asked them to call me to approve the work first. They said it would be five-forty-five. When I hesitated, they said, "Son, that's $5.45. This is Mr. and Mrs. ____'s car isn't it?"

That was life in a small town.
