So... we have to take a necessary roadtrip.
DH and I are leaving Thursday after I get out of class for Indiana for my Great-grandfather's funeral.

(Some of ya'll from cooking and baking may remember that I spent a couple months out there the first part of the year when he was recuperating from a nasty bacterial infection. Well, this time it looks like the gators are about to finally get him. He probably won't make it through the night. He's welcoming death, and has been looking forward to it for some time now. And if there's a Heaven, and if people really go there for being good people, he's on the VIP, escorted to the front of the line, easy entry list. So, it's sad, but at the same time, a relief for all of us left.)

Anyway... Sad to say, it's cheaper for the two of us to drive, though we'd rather take the train, but once we figure in a rental car that won't get 45 MPG, it's just not going to happen. And flying... don't make me laugh.

Can anyone suggest reasonable motels in eastern Kansas or Western to middle Missouri for Thursday night? I'm just not thinking we can drive 18 hours straight through, and even if we could, we'd be pretty cramped and unhappy campers when we finally got in to Greentown.

Finally, any suggestions on things we absolutely must bring with us or that will make the trip less than ucky?

1. I'm of the mind
that on road trips, if all you need is a bed and a hot shower, go with Motel 6. You pay the bare minimum and get the bare minimum. If I was going to be staying somewhere for a few days, then I'll pay premium. Otherwise, 30 or 40 bucks for a night is fine.
