14. In the first picture, the hypotenuse buckles in,
so the area is less than (1/2)(5)(13). In the second picture, it buckles out. The discrepancy is exactly one unit.

I've photoshopped this so that the points for the green and red triangles line up, but now we can see that they are at different angles.

Your brain makes a straight line between the dark green and red triangle, even though they're actually at different angles. So, as alarcojon stated, one of the triangles that is composed of the pieces has a concave hypotenuse, while the other has a convex hypotenuse. The one the bulges out (the one on the bottom) would take more space to fill, but since they've used the same pieces, the area of the pieces is the same, leaving a gap that's not filled.
