All boarded up and as ready as we can be. I'll stay safe. Thanks.

I would be as well.....but you have done all you can, and now all you can do is to hold on tight.....

And endure its passing over you......:grouphug:

13. Best of luck
you should be fine. The storm has a 100 miles to go overland before it gets to you. Be sure to roll up your car windows and bring the cats in.

16. Thanks for the chuckle, Kenroy.
The cats were the last ones to come in and we put up the last panels after them.

Those 100 miles would be more comforting if it wasn't moving do darn fast. Not enough time to weaken it. We'll just hope for the best.

18. well
remember, it slowed WAY down over Cancun - to 4 miles per hour.

Plus, it's still a few hundred miles away from you and could easily go north or south.

You'll have a storm, no doubt, but don't panic yet. There's a lot of things that could happen to this storm before it hits your area.

It did freak me out a little when I saw Max Mayfield draw the path right through where we live. I'll hold off on the panic. You're right, of course, that it could take a turn. We'll know in a few hours.

Ok on a serious note. Try rebooting your modem, router, or any other device you have in the line. Also the standard reboot your PC is a good idea as well.

17. I've done all that.
Adelphia is having trouble in my area, so they say. It gets really slow, to the point that it quits altogether. I'm switching to DSL next week, as soon as the new modem gets here.

I'll definitely let you know if it goes down. I'll just send up some smoke signals ... it's up to you to separate the smoke from the storm clouds. :)

23. No, I have a 75 year old house built for a Cat. 5 hurricane.
Many in the neighborhood did leave but many of us stayed.

We were on the edge of Rita.

I wasn't scared, we just stayed up and watched the storm.

24. I bet you're glad you stayed.
Watching that traffic jam made me decide I would stay ... well, unless my house was below sea level or something like that. Can you imagine trying to get out of FL? The only direction is north.

I'm getting less scared with all the support out there. :)

25. You bet I was glad. I don't know who thought that over 2 million people
could get on the freeways and highways at the same time.

If the traffic is bad the safest place is home, I wouldn't want to be in my car stuck out on the highway with a hurricane coming.

Is you house high enough so you won't flood. I am in a high area, but we did flood in June 2001, but my house is built off the ground and I had it raised.

I will be here until about 6 am or so, then I have to go to work.

I have to work 2 weeks on day hours, I hate that. I can't sleep so I am just staying up. Glad to keep you company.

Being scared is OK, I would be to.

It is a little windy here, we are having our first cold front.

The winds are about 22 mph now, my wind chimes are banging around.

26. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out
that the traffic is bad on a normal day during rush hour. The roads just aren't made for that much traffic. I'm with you -- I would not want to be stuck on the road ... no bathrooms, no showers, no beds, AND a hurricane coming?

We're not in too much danger of flooding, according to my insurance agent (famous last words, I know). We're far enough from the coast so that the storm surge won't be a problem. Also, FL can take more rain than most places. We do happen to have the highest lot in the neighborhood. :)

Wow -- you have to work at 6 AM and you're up all night? Do you usually work night hours?

I don't hear a thing yet. Oh, I remember how the wind would blow a cold front in. Never thought I'd miss it, but I'll take the cold over the storm today.

27. I usually work nights but some groups of fools thought a change for a
few weeks would be nice, for who. I keep telling myself it is only for two weeks.

I am glad you are in a high area, being in flood is no fun. If Rita would have visited Houston, we would have flooded. I live near I-10 that would have flooded again, and with so many people stuck on the freeway. We were getting ready with our various small boats to rescue people if necessary. This section of I-10 is built below ground.

I wish I could send this cold front your way, but the hurricane will be over soon. Just try to relax, I heard it was fast moving hurricane.

My first hurricane was a Cat. 5 called Hurricane Carla(spelling) when I was a very small child. We were at my Grandparents farmhouse about 30 miles from the center of the storm, all I can remember is the house shaking a little and lots of wind, and playing with my cousins.

I found the stress of waiting for Rita was the worse, not knowing what would happen. Walking around my neighborhood was so strange, most people gone. I had 25 people, several cats and dogs staying at my house, including one woman, my neighbor who is almost 100 years old. It was a very interesting night.

28. After Katrina, I was going to leave a raft handy.
We have plenty for the pool, after all. But my husband put them away where I can't get to them. I thought it was a good idea.

I'm sure glad you escaped all that nastiness! Wow. And all those people on the freeway. Why were all those politicians patting themselves on the back b/c the evacuation went so well?

Yes, the stress of waiting is bad. I'm pretty sure we'll have a house in the morning, but I don't know what else will be left. We have a screened patio -- the screen enclosure can only take 135 mph winds. That's the frame. The screens will probably blow out completely. I hope not! We have huge deductibles for hurricane damage in FL. It's ridiculous.

Wow, you got introduced to hurricanes all at once. Cat. 5! I was in NJ for my first hurricane and I don't remember much about it.

That's quite a houseful. We had a bunch of people and all their pets over once. Yes, it was interesting ... and crowded.

29. I had the only house really built for a hurricane, old homes in Houston
were built with the 1900 Galveston hurricane in memory.

Everybody was OK except for the cats, my cats still are looking around for the other cats that were here.

We had plenty to eat, good stories to listen to from my neighbor.

Ya'll will get hit a lot harder then we did, Beaumont and points east of Houston got hit very hard. We had our lights back by 4 in the afternoon, I was very surprised when the lights came back so quickly.

I will be so glad when this hurricane season is over, I still have the tops of my windows covered. I am not taking them down until the season is over, and not going though all that again.

I am watching CNN now, the wind is strong. Florida sure has been hit by hurricanes. Ya'll must be so sick of them.

30. Oh ... of course!
You would think they would keep the building codes up for hurricanes. That's interesting.

Your cats are funny. :loveya: I have two of mine with me right now, one on each side. I'd like to shift around a little, but can't disturb the little princesses.

It sure is looking like we're going to get clobbered. I am SO sick of hurricanes. I was sick of them a year ago. We're leaving the panels up in the back and the cabana room, maybe till Christmas. We only have a 1-story house, but it's still a pain to put them up.

Yeah, the wind is strong. We're not actually seeing anything here yet ... well, I don't hear anything yet. Can't see a damn thing.

33. Certain people picked on me for buying my old house, it looked sad
when I bought it. I fell in love with it when I discovered it was Cat. 5 rated, building one that is isn't that hard.

My old house has been though many storms, I wasn't worried. The wood in my house is so hard, you just can't get wood now. I don't know why building codes changed, I rather stay home then leave.

I read on another thread about your house, wow ya'll have a strong house. Concrete, thats good. The wind will come but the house will protect you and your family.

I have 3 cats and they all just disappeared that night somewhere in the house, to many other cats for them.

Do you have trees, the trees take a beating.

I had my trees trimed but I would hate to loose them.

34. I love old houses.
Our last house was built in 1940 and it was very charming. We built new here b/c the building codes were changing that year and we wanted the extra protection. I'm not too worried about the house, although it has never really been tested. I hope it's as strong as it's supposed to be! I am worried about the screen enclosure and stuff that we had to tie down rather than bring inside.

My cats each pick a piece of furniture and I can always find them on that piece. They don't snuggle up together like other cats. I have no idea why. They all snuggle up with me, though.

We only have palm trees. They have very strong roots, but the tops can blow off and then they'll have to come down. We keep them trimmed pretty well, but it's not like they'll cause damage ... none of them are really big (no Royal palms).
