| Personal tip for avoiding non-payment credit card fees... (online banking) |
|
If you're like me and put everything off until the last minute (like my 2003 taxes that I have to do by the end of the month!) you may have occassionally missed the deadline on a credit card payment and paid RIDICULOUS fees ($29) for not paying on time...
So, if you have online banking like me, here's a great tip:
Even though you have a different amount for each of your credit cards every month, set up a recurring, monthly payment to each for a bit more than what your usual minimum monthly payment is. (this, of course, does not apply if that's all you make!)
My minimum to AMERX, for example, is about $15. So I set a recurring payment of $30 (about what my non-payment penalty was) to be made WELL IN ADVANCE. So now, I WILL NEVER be made to pay the non-payment fees even if I forget to make the month's payment in time...

The first time you get charged a late fee they will waive it if you call them and ask nicely.
So if you do this then open a new card (with a different cc company) a month or two later, transfer your balance over, and close your old account. Then if you get charged a late fee on this new account it will still be your *first* (as far as the cc company is concerned) and so they should still waive it.
