JACKSON TOWNSHIP | A Michigan City man who was charged over the weekend with abandoning his 4-month-old son in a car called police to report the car, but not his baby, missing.
Porter County police were called about 11 p.m. Saturday by James O'Rourke, of High Point Drive in Jackson Township. He told police he saw a car parked in front of his home with the driver's door open and the dome light on.
The only occupant of the car was a 4-month-old boy.
Because no parent was around, O'Rourke called police. Officers said it wasn't until two hours later that the baby's father -- William Kersey, 30 -- called to report the car missing.
Police arrested Kersey, who was with his 4-year-old daughter, on two counts of child neglect and on a warrant. Child Protective Services ended up taking Kersey's baby son and his daughter.
Police said they got involved at 11 p.m. Saturday when the baby was found unattended. They traced the car to a LaPorte County man who said he lent the car to Kersey. The car's owner refused to cooperate any further, police said.
Police said Kersey finally called from a house on County Road 400 East, about a mile and a half northeast of where he left the car.
Kersey told police he misplaced the car. Police said they asked him if anything of value was inside the car, and he said there was not. Police told Kersey they found a baby, at which time he admitted leaving his son behind. Police said he stated he became lost in the area, was hit or punched by someone and then decided to chase three attackers into the woods.
Kersey told police he then discovered his daughter was in the woods, but they became lost and couldn't find their vehicle. He said they found a house and called police. Police found no signs of injury to Kersey.
"There appears to be more to the story than we were able to determine," said Sgt. Timothy Emmons, Porter County police spokesman.
"His story seems somewhat suspicious."
