OHMYGAWD - A fundie is praying for me because of my review of a book!!
From time to time I post snarky comments about certain books out there and I'm so tired of how all these xtians are jumping on the Ashley Smith bandwagon. For those who don't know who Ashley Smith is - she was held hostage by an escape convict. To save her life Ms. Smith read to the convict from the bible, from "A Purpose Driven Life" and them um, gave to him from her Crystal Meth stash since she had no marijuana to offer him. Fundies are, for some bizarre reason just eating this up.

Personally, knowing that I can't even buy a damn bottle of Nyquil without filling out a form and showing ID, I have little respect for Crankheads. And knowing that the recovery rate from addiction is in the single addictions, I personally feel this book is nothing more than an attempt for Ms. Smith to fund her tweaker ways.

So I guess my review has my home email address on it (which btw, I'm going to fix) and I received this email today from an Xtian fundie.

Hi,

I'd like to tell you that I think you are a self-righteous you-know-what.Your review of Ashley Smith's book was unbelievable. I think you need to find out what being a Christian is all about. God Bless you. I'm praying for you.

1. Wow, some of these people really need to read their new testaments.
What is he/she praying? That you'll stop being a "self-righteous you know what"? Isn't he/she being one because he/she is doing the EXACT THING THEY ACCUSE YOU OF?

Oh lord.

3. I wasn't the most christian person
I mean I just basically called Ashley Smith what she is - A lying crankhead who is using the sytem to profit off of her addiction

This is what I posted:

The girl offered him CRANK - hardly an angel, October 16, 2005

Reviewer: LynneSin (Delaware) - See all my reviews
Yesterday I had to go to the drug store to get some Nyquil because of a cold I've been dealing with for the past week. In order to purchase this medicine I had to give the pharmacist my driver's license and sign a form. All this because of crankheads like Ashley Scott who are a plague on our society. Common cold medication has to be regulated to prevent crankheads like Ashley Scott from furthering their drug addiction.

Everyone thinks she's some sort of hero and a good Christian. Well what the heck is a Christian doing with Crystal Meth (aka Crank) in her home. I mean, I'm glad that she could use it to save her life but she is not a hero nor is she an angel. She is a plague on our society with one of the fastest growing addictions in this nation (and one of the most highly addictive). And don't kid yourself about recovery - recovery from addiction to Crystal Meth is around 6% success.

It's sickening that the media treats her like some sort of hero. Crank users are not heros - they are zeros - losers that plague our society. Buying this book is basically a way to support her habit. As the saying goes with drug users - you know when they're lying because their lips are moving

7. You're right, though...
It's so weird that they're glazing right past the "SHE GAVE HIM CRANK"ness of it all. Especially considering it's way worse than the weed the guy wanted! I guess that's fine because he's a criminal?

But the person who's "praying" for you--very hypocritical and silly, really.

4. But,
is not the part about "self-righteous you-know-what" somewhat judgemental? Is there not some xtian rule about that? Judge not, blah blah blah?

Some of the untrue believers talk a good game, but it seems sometimes that they omit the rules they wish others to live by from their own lives.

But, it's nice that this person will think of you....:D

But I have known a few crankheads in my lifetime and trust me - you want to keep them very far away from you! I just think this book is the biggest scam out there and Xtians (not Christians like us normal people are) think this is the greatest book next to the Bible & The Purpose Driven Life

most meth addicts will smoke lith before crank... meth is the crystal higher-grade form. they aren't synonymous.

But it IS pretty telling when addicts would rather smoke a paste made from battery lithium than crank (eeeeeeek)

Good for her if she is really clean, but the cynic in me thinks she will just purchase meth from a higher-priced neighborhood.

They do it to me all the time. I cannot stand the thought of right wing wacko xtians praying to their god about me. That's probably why I have such bad luck. I need to get more liberals praying to the liberal version of God for me to counteract the bad luck I am getting from the right wing bible thumpers.

I'm an extremely liberal Christian.

My opinion is simple - if Ashley Smith really wants to clean her self from Meth then she should use this new found money and enter rehab. Outside of that I think she's using the public to fuel her habit

23. Thank you.
Maybe if I can see it the way I mentioned, that there is a liberal God too, I can overcome this hideous luck I seem to be having in life. Having good people with good hearts praying for me to counteract the mean ones that support Bush and other evil may actually work. I believe it's highly possible. I appreciate it a lot. I need it.

I want to be free. I want to become an engineer despite my math malfunction. I want to build a modest home to live in and build a little personal economy music studio one day.

I want my aunt to live longer and get well from her congestive heart failure too. She has ms and isn't doing well lately. I worry about her, but she doesn't want me to worry despite the fact that I think she needs better medical care than the VA gives her. They are woefully lacking under the Bush admin. When Clinton's admin ran the VA, it was much better and they had capable people working there. Now, all they do is refer you endlessly to other people. Now, they want to take my aunt's social security check until her co-pay for meds is paid up after they promised that if we paid them $20 a month they wouldn't do that. I know it's been paid every single month without fail for the last 2 years, because I send it in and make sure of it. We both need strength and all the help we can get to hold up under this pressure. Too much is piling up and weighing us both down.

24. A bottle of NyQuil? Wee-ha!
In most places, only pseudoephedrine in tablet form is regulated. Supposedly the liquid form is nearly impossible to convert to meth.

At that point I would seriously consider crossing into PA or MD.

Especially since there are a ton of meth labs in the northeast corner of the state. And I'm sure PA will be locking them up soon since Bucks County was like once the biggest producer of meth.

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/gwinnett/0905/28ashleysmith.html

DA: No meth charges against Ashley Smith

By LATEEF MUNGIN and JENNIFER BRETT
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 09/28/05

Ashley Smith does not have to worry about police arresting her during her book tour.

Gwinnett District Attorney Danny Porter said he will not press criminal charges against Smith even though she admitted to giving crystal methamphetamine to alleged courthouse killer Brian Nichols the night she was held hostage.

In her new book released this week, Smith said she offered Nichols some of a small stash of the drug she had at her Duluth apartment after the March 11 Fulton County Courthouse shootings

43. You guys are being really hard on someone who was a crime victim
I don't care if she was a drug addict, she didn't deserve to be held at gunpoint by a man who had just killed a bunch of people. She must have been terrified.

Some people do get the living crap scared out of them and respond by straightening out their lives. Some people do that by attending church and having a spiritual awakening.

I would never try to limit the possibility that perhaps God did work through her to get the killer to turn himself in. If God had to rely on only perfect vessels to do his work, well, he'd be hard put to find them.

"My grace is sufficient for thee, for My strength is made perfect in weakness" 2 Corinthians 12:9
God works through our weaknesses as well as our strengths. Ashley's weakness gave her something in common with this guy, that made her a trustworthy person in his eyes.

44. You're absolutely right but....
Edited on Wed Oct-19-05 09:30 AM by LynneSin
...there are thousands of crime victims everyday and 99.9999999% of them don't get massive book deals & talk show. I open the paper everyday and read about the Ashley Smiths of the world and their heroic struggles to survive terrible ordeals. But they might not be blonde & white like Ashley or maybe they didn't try using the Bible and a cult book like "Purpose Driven Life" to save their lives. But ultimately what won her over with her captor was the fact that she gave him Crystal Meth, one of the most highly addictive drugs out there (6% recovery rate from addiction). She's a drug addict and I know when addicts are lying because their lips are moving.

You want to read about heros - read your local newspaper - the stories are in there. I'd rather give my $20 to help one of those people out than to give it to some hyped up Crankhead who probably is still using to this day.

45. Points taken
but I think LynneSin's complaint lies more with Ashley's fan base.

I think she was in her own way very resourceful and I respect that. But her fans are not interested in a real woman who used everything she could think of to save her life, they want a poster girl for Jesus. Meth is inconsistent with that. The Purpose-Driven Life stays in the picture, and meth goes.

If anything, it's a measure of lack of faith in God that they feel compelled to deny some facts and play up others. If you believe a miracle occurred, and meth was part of that, but you deny the meth, then aren't you, in effect, quibbling with God about how He pulled it off? Leave it to a fundy to second-guess God.
