'Devil Went Down To Georgia' Pulled From Band Playlist - C. Daniels Speaks
Edited on Wed Oct-19-05 08:57 AM by Skinner
<snip>

After the devil went down to Georgia, it seems, he got censored in Prince William County.

In preparation for a guest appearance at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, the marching band at C.D. Hylton High School had a logical and seemingly innocuous idea: play a Georgia-themed song. They decided on "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," by the Charlie Daniels Band.

But early this month, a local newspaper, the Potomac News, published a letter by a Woodbridge resident who, after having seen the C.D. Hylton Bulldawg Marching Band perform the country-western hit at a football game, wondered how a song about the devil could be played at school events, because of the separation of church and state.

Fearing bad public reaction, Hylton's longtime band director, Dennis Brown, pulled the song from the playlist. "I was just being protective of my students. I didn't want any negative publicity for C.D. Hylton High School," he said.

1. "The devil bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat"
He laid that golden fiddle on the ground at Johnny's feet...

So these morans censor a song where the Devil loses?! Why do they hate America so much?

That song SUCKS.

Now, Charlie's version of 'Orange Blossom Special' - that's fiddlin'. Plus: no singing.

3. I would not classify that song as religious at all
It is merely using some religious imagery for humorous effect, but other than "the devil" there is nothing pushing a theology or an agenda in it at all.

If it said that Johnny won because God is on his side, then it would be different. But it's just one of those fun Americana kind songs.

4. And as to the "the majority rules" asswipe,
get a clue, shitbrain. The majority rules ONLY in terms of voting, you stupid fuck.

The reason we have checks and balances is so that the majority cannot become a tyrrany - and it's why the Supreme Court has the final say on whether a law is constitutional or not, because even if 90% of Americans suddenly decided that forcing school children to eat paste every morning was a great idea, it's still illegal.

Fucking piece of shit.

I hate you "the majority rules" people; especially since you never seem to care when a majority elects a democrat, then you piss and whine about how "yeah, but not EVERYONE wanted him! He has no mandate!"

Fuck you.

7. Daniels is a freeper-- turnabout is fair play
he was shooting his fat mouth off about how we were going to "liberate" Iraq back in 2003. He didn't have any qualms about stifling dissent against the war back then.

Now one of his songs gets censored. Tough titty for Charlie. Now he knows how it feels to have his voice silenced. Maybe he'll think twice before he unquestionably supports a regime that doesn't value free expression.

8. Hmmm.
"...and now the ruling party is knuckling under to every left wing nut out there? I give up!"

Maybe it's just me, but I get the hunch that the writer who complained about the song was probably a right-wing nut. One who disengenuously played the "separation of church and state" card, but in all actuality took umbrage at the school marching band playing a song about "the devil".

18. I never cared for ol' Charlie D.
He's nothing more than a Tennessee tobacco farmer who can play the fiddle. His "music" never impressed me.

23. How about they play this song then:
Ring the good ol' bugle, boys, we'll sing another song,
Sing it with the spirit that will start the world along,
Sing it as we used to sing it 50,000 strong
While we were marching through Georgia.

CHORUS:Hurrah, hurrah, we bring the jubilee!
Hurrah, hurrah, the flag that makes you free!
So we sang the chorus from Atlanta to the sea
While we were marching through Georgia!

If that ain't a song about Georgia!

24. I wish we didn't always have to hear about other's religion...
I'm really sick of it. If someone doesn't like something, they have to attack it from a religious stance. In defending themselves, the response is generally "Well, of course...I'm an upstanding Christian."

Really tired of it.

I miss the days where no one talked about religion, and it was a private and personal matter.

Oh, wait a minute, has that EVER been a reality here?

26.  A ridiculous overreaction to a harmless song, in my opinion....
But then, who wants to hear a marching band play COUNTRY????

And there's no fiddle in a marching band anyway. Are they gonna have Satan playing a tuba??

The Devil bowed his head
cause he knew that he'd been beat
And he dropped that golden tuba
and it broke both Johnny's feet.....
