How did you discover DU?
I googled "when did liberal became a dirty word?" & got several articles, the top listed was this one from DU:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/articles/02/11/23_...

It's a great article by the way.

Once I read it, I checked out the home page, then found the forum & I knew I had found an online community to discuss my concerns & frustrations with the horror that is going on in my country. This was in spring of 2004.

My friends & family are amazed at how much I know about current events & often will say "no that's not true" only to hear a day later the very news I had relayed to them. I spend more time at DU than any other site.

15. Gosh, I forget, I wish I could remember
but I think I found it accidentally, while looking for good sites. I used to hang out regularly at a very large current affairs site that's local, and got used to the give and take, arguing and all that, about the issues and every possible side of them. But, then our nation took it's radically ugly turn, and some of the folks on that board took it too. When they argued, viciously, about the torture issue when it first came out, I about gave up. Later now it's been shown to be real, and very bad. But at the time, all they wanted to say was "not enough proof". It was enough for ME to be very concerned, but only enough for them to get angry at me for it. Then, when the story came out in February about "broken heart syndrome" being real, and me already having experienced it, I figured it was time to leave there for good. Can only take so much heartbreak. And those people sure did break my heart. I was on there for years, and had quite a bit of familiarity with a lot of the posters, but it was a hurtful place when the tone changed.

I wish I could remember how I found this site. I think I found it myself, just looking around for forums, somewhere I could talk to people, with a "sanity filter" as I think of it here. Repubs not welcome, neocon's not praised, lies discussed as lies. I don't think this site was given to me, I don't think. Dang I just can't remember. I want to say it must have been a link off another site that I followed. I think. I just can't remember. It's an ongoing problem, as I recall, the second problem of old age ;)

24. If you type in BUSH SUCKS in a search engine
eventually you'll come to a DU link. In September 2001 I was still demoralized unable to watch any news programs and being a junkie I started looking for liberal political websites, I started out by typing bush sucks and following the links to where I felt comfortable.
Sometime during the third week of October 01 I came across DU read for a few minutes, and I've been here ever since.

25. Slashdot
Somebody on Slashdot was having a ding-dong with a freeper (I didn't know about freepers at the time but in retrospect, he must have been) and I was reading the thread with interest. Clearly losing the argument, the freeper resorted to denouncing his opponent by saying that he got all his anti-Bush sentiment from The Democratic Underground and even provided a link. The amusing thing was that the freeper's opponent said he had never even heard of DU, thanked him and said he'll be making regular visits there from now on. At which point the flamewar ended.

Of course, I'd never heard of DU either so there was at least two people the idiot freeper converted that day. This must be three years ago now so I can't remember the Slashdot user's name but I'd love to know if he still visits here.

26. I was incouraged to check out DU by a friend,
Telling me I needed to read some of Bob Boutalangs take on things. I did and now I'm stuck. I've learned a lot about our country's place in the whole scheme of things and I've learned a hell of a lot about myself. It's my most trusted source of what I feel I need to know. A lot of excellent writers some with very good investigative skills and some great artwork. (MoPaul, Distress American) just to name a couple.
At some point in time DU will become a movement if it hasn't already.
:woohoo:

I can't remember how I found the Top 10, probably googling something about bush. I read it faithfully for months before discovering the wonders of the DU message board. I think I joined right before the election. I don't participate much as a poster but read as many of the posts as possible in the time I am online. I also get most of my information from DU. :)

I'd say to all reading this that you should go there immediately, but the author has messed with the color scheme and until he changes it back to something readable, it's not too appealing at the moment (at least asthetically).

I'd never seen a forum like this before & I found it really easy to navigate. I held off joining for well over a year, partly because the whole concept of net-debate was new to me & partly because I felt slightly awkward as a Brit posting on an American board.
