What is the greatest country band on earth?
By the way, are there country bands in other countries besides the US and Canada?

5. Do I get to include Alt Country?
I really like Uncle Tupelo and The Foggy Bottom Boys.

Do Blind Boys of Alabama qualify, cause I really like them too.

Dixie Chicks qualify in this category as well.

9. the first one that dies
Now that Johnny Cash is gettin' too old, there's just about no good country left.

Oak Ridge Boys were cool.

Love Roy Clark.

Lester and Scruggs were great.

Never did like Conway Twitty, though, and especially not the Twitty-Birds.

11. Alison Krause & Union Station
Perhaps more of a Bluegrass band than a Country band.

I've always been a fan, and I watched a show that they did for WTTW's Soundstage the other night.

Wonderful. Really a great band.

For my money, AK :loveya: has the "purest" voice in music. Plays a mean fiddle, too.

Listen to Connie Smith's "band" on one of her Greatest Hits CDs, and you'll swear they're the greatest.

I love the Statlers!

And Harold is so damn funny.

After the Statlers, Alabama, Oaks, Sawyer Brown, Georgia Satellites, just too many greats.

Sawyer Brown's greatest hits certainly can match Alabama's. And although I've only heard a few Statler Brothers songs, I'm sure I can put them in based on songs like "Do You Know You Are My Sunshine," "Flowers On The Wall," and "Green Green Grass Of Home."

new list:

#1 Dixie Chicks
#2 Alison Krauss & Union Station
#3 Statler Brothers

HM: Diamond Rio, Sawyer Brown, Nickel Creek, Alabama, BlackHawk, The Tractors

There's plenty of country music from other countries, yep. Recent favorites:

Setona - Queen of Henna (she's sudanese I think. It's hard to explain what it sounds like. Kind of rockish)
Pimpa Pornsiri (thai loogthung "country" music) really great. You can hear clips on http://www.thainetcity.com
Bahnyen Rahgan is another great thai country music artist

All music is world music.

Edit: Ooh ohh, a great american country artist is Eck Robertson. For american country, it's miles and miles of crap with few jewels, mostly the old stuff not the new stuff. But then that pretty much applies to most current music everywhere I suppose...

Asleep at the Wheel are great!

Let us not forget The Austin Lounge Lizards, who have given us so many wonderful songs like "Gingrich the Newt" and "Life is Hard, but Life is Harder When You're Dumb."

25. Buck Owens and The Buckaroos (when the great Don Rich was still alive)
They were a real band with Buck and Don playing loudasfuck through their twins.

Flying Burrito Bros with a different singer (Parsons was a great songwriter, but a pretty weak singer)

"Honky Tonk Women"
"Far Away Eyes"
"Let It Bleed"

Whenever they felt like it, the Stones could kick most country bands back to the wagon.
