I got laid-off today but the Freepers did also!
I've talked before about my (now-former) workplace being infested with super Freepers.

I worked in a large I.T. department doing the usual networking, computer-fixing stuff.
The department had 12 people working there. ....11 of them staunch Republicans. (Go Figure)
Anyway, for the 14 months I've worked there I've had to hear (endure) the constant babble about how wonderful George Bush is and how the economy will really take off soon.

This morning when I went in I got a call to go to an office to fix a network connection...(no big deal)
While I was working and just got done the head Manager passed by the office and said he'd like to have a word with me....I could sense that the news was not good.
He said that since the company and it's business were falling off that he has been told by the powers-that-be to do some cost-cutting measures and he was going to have to lay me off. He gave me an orange envelope that had all the usual stuff when such events happen.

I went back to the I.T. department and started getting my stuff ready to leave the building and also told the other workers (Freepers) the bad news about me getting the Axe.

I got to hear (once more) about how the economy will turn around and how easy I'll be able to find another job( Yeah, right, pal)

As I'm getting my stuff together the Head Manager comes into the Department with 3 orange envelopes....(start Jaws theme> Dun-dun-dun-DUN-DUN,DUN,DUN,DUN,DUN)

He calls the names of other 3 other people and says he wants to talk to them outside. Man,O,Man...talking about seeing faces fall!

Well, they come back in about 5 minutes and of course are laid-off.

I know I should have kept my mouth shut but I just had to say "Well don't worry, I'm sure George's tax-cuts for the rich will kick in any day now and we'll all be back at work"

I walked out and never looked back.

2. Sorry to hear about you being laid off...
My husband lost his job over a year ago now. I believe that God has helped us survive to this point. I hope you can use your skills to your advantage and find something soon. Best of luck!

3. Should have kept your mouth shut why?
What you said was perfect. I'm sure you have no desire to stay in touch with them, but it sure would be interesting to see how things turn out. Here's wishing a nice looooooong period of unemployment on the freeper scum. Not on you though!

6. Almost exact same scenario happened to me 2 years go.

(but without the satisfaction of being able to stick it to the freepers as I was being walked out the door) I was busting my chops trying to fix a problem with a remote node on a WAN and my manger's boss came by and said he needed to talk to me in a meeting room upstairs. At the time I was really busy getting this problem resolved and said that I was in the middle of a problem and could it wait. He said "Sure, come and see me when you're done."

Well about 45 minutes later I walk in and he is sitting at a desk with a bunch of paperwork and there is one of the HR managers in the room as well. Didn't have to be Einstein to figure out what was coming down. I got a pretty good settlement package though so I wasn't really complaining. Also the place was becoming a real suck hole place to work. When I joined them 10 years previously they had been a small privately held company but about a year prior to my layoff they'd been taken over by a Canadian mega corporation and the whole work environment about the place had changed for the worse.

However finding work in IT has been tough in Canada too, not just the US. I've been mainly existing on contract jobs and part time stuff since then.

11. "With your skills you should be fine"?
Bandy says: "keep your chin up with your skills you should be fine. I sure wish you all the Luck possible."

Trust me, your skills have NOTHING, zero, zilch to do with the ability to find a job in this abysmal bush economy. I know hundreds of intelligent, talented, highly skilled people who have been out of work for 9 to 18 months...and more. Luck? Yeah, luck is about all anyone has going for them finding a job in the bush economy. That and accepting slave wages in the part-time service industry.

Take my advice - go out and splurge on something that allows you to feel better about yourself. Realize that your being fired has NOTHING at all to do with you, your skills or your work.

Then, hunker down for an extremely long haul. Cut back on as many expenses as possible. If you have the resources, retire as much debt as possible as quickly as possible. Delay any major purchases you were planning on making. If you can find any work at all, take it.

Prosperity is NOT around the corner; the economy is going to suck for AT LEAST the next 4 years, even if a Dem gets elected in 2004.

Sorry to be so pessimistic. Just consider this your "moment of Zen" for the day.

10. That's looking on the bright side!
Which is what one has to do.

Sympathies and good wishes to you and to all the rest of us who've been laid off.
