Poll question: Advisor or Adviser? Which is correct?
As in "The Advisor to the President."

My computers spellchecker says "advisor", but DU's spellcheck says "adviser." I Googled the spelling, but both words seem to be correct.

What do you think?

Poll result (10 votes)
Advisor: (9 votes, 90%)Vote
Adviser: (0 votes, 0%)Vote
Both are correct: (1 votes, 10%)Vote

But I prefer advisor personally.

From Webster:

Main Entry: ad·vise
Pronunciation: &d-'vIz
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): ad·vised; ad·vis·ing
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French aviser, from avis
transitive senses
1 a : to give advice to : COUNSEL <advise her to try a drier climate> b : CAUTION, WARN <advise them of the consequences> c : RECOMMEND <advise prudence>
2 : to give information or notice to : INFORM <advise them of their rights>
intransitive senses
1 : to give advice <advise on legal matters>
2 : to take counsel : CONSULT
- ad·vis·er also ad·vi·sor /-'vI-z&r/ noun

Snip

May 13, 2005

Someone asked today in a comment whether "documentor" or "documenter" is correct. The corect word is "documenter." The question got me wondering, though, about another spelling dilemma: "adviser" or "advisor."

According to the Cambridge Guide to English Usage (Pam Peters, 2004):

Both these spellings are in current use, though adviser is the dominant spelling in both the US and the UK. The ratio in American data from CCAE is 20:1 and in British data from the BNC it's 6:1. Curiously, advisor is sometimes said to be "the American spelling." …whatever its past, advisor is registered alongside adviser in major British, American, Canadian and Australian dictionaries.

BTW:

"The corect word is "documenter."

He misspelled correct.

4. To late!
Based on the votes, I decided that to go with "advisor." Therefore, "adviser" is hereby the wrong way to spell it.

FYI... here is the article I where I used the word: www.brainshrub.com/token-advisor
