Just found this out about Armageddon, very interesting
Edited on Fri Nov-14-03 03:38 AM by LeviathanCrumbling
Apparently the name Armageddon is only a corruption of the Hebrew phrase, Har Megiddo, which means the mount of Megiddo. Over the last 4 thousand years 36 major battles (many of which have decided that direction of western civilization) have been fought in this area.

A few notable battles are; Thutmose v. Canaanites, Gideon v. Midianites, Saul v. Phillistines, Vespasian v. Jewish Rebels, Saladin v. Crusaders (3 times), Napoleon v. Ottomans, Allenby (allied forces) v. Ottomans, Israelis v. Arabs.

I’m completely non-religions and don’t believe in this stuff at all but I thought it was pretty interesting. I also thought it was kind of ironic that during WW2, which actually was a battle between good and evil, there was never a battle there.

1. You can visit the site. A lot of people went there January 1, 2000 just
in case, if you know what I mean. I love your moniker by the
way. :) The history of the Middle East is amazing.

2. The history of the Middle East is fascinating.
The republicans are fools to continue to export violence and war there. For 4 thousand years every great western empire has tried their hand at stabilizing the region with war, maybe some day some one will try using peace instead of war to attain peace.

4. yup. I get a great kick out of reminding the fundies that come to my
door (the only time I agnostic/atheist bait and then they're asking for it) what happened in 1916-17 with Allenby, immediately followed by a mass die-off of pretty righteous people who hadn't had a lot of time to sin and had probably accepted Jesus....

Yes, I'm talking World War I and the Flu epidemic. It affected young people disproportionately.

It sometimes stops them cold. They get this glazed, thinking, kinda scared look.

Then I remind them that the Jehovah's Witnesses (if they're not JW) predicted a 1918 Rapture.

Then I shut the door and turn off the doorbell.

And giggle.

Politicat (who really is neither vindictive nor mean, but is an historian and has read far too many prophecies that went pffft. And no, it's not all Christians that I do this to, just the ones who come to my door and want to torture my poor mother. She doesn't want to give birth to me again. I'm bigger now. )

They also predicted armageddon would come in 1914, 1920, 1925, 1941, 1975 and a few other years. They just revise it and attribute it to faulty calculations every decade or so.

(revised to reflect more dates in list)
