"Tell us how you really feel!"
Do people say this to you with regularity?

How does it make you feel?

3. It makes me think that possibly I've ranted at the wrong people.
But people don't generally say this to me in person. Online, every now and then, but not in person.

4. Why don't you tell us how you really feel?
That you think we are beneath you and not up to standards? That's what you really mean, isn't it? That we're too dumb to understand, not quite up to your intellectual standards, not quite elevated to your supreme level of mature interpersonal communication?

Dick.

16. hubby has a story from work...
he'd sent a systemic overview into operations that was not acted upon, in a debriefing his middle manager, a female (may not matter but that was the 'moment' so as to say), with a history of making simple straight forward issues sticky & tacky, asked him that question, "how do you really feel?" he offered stock, innocuous answers, "I understand fully" "these things aren't always absorbed at 1st blush..." etc; yet she persisted,

"yes, but how do you really feel about it?" with eyes narrow & bird-like, beading...

he's very quick about reading things, seen it coming, so that he asked her in response, "i'm sorry, and um, excuse me, but; are you trying to engage me on a psychiatric level?" to which she slowly nodded never blinking, or breaking her gaze. it sounded an odd sort of event to me as he related it. he went on to explain to her the solace he finds within systemic analysis being absent squishy, emotional points of reference & the debriefing concluded. that was his story, but my sense is simpler.

unless they are your dear friends you know well to care for you, a question such as, "Tell us how you really feel!" uttered by they whom do not, is too often posed in such a way to merely gain advantage atop a vulnerability unseen previously. otherwise...

never tip your hand to a river boat gambler is my thought :hi:

17. they say that because they can't handle the truth.....
....most people don't want to hear the truth regardless if they can handle it or not...it's a defense mechanism statement made offhandedly to attempt to put you back in your place for makin' 'em think too hard. :hi:

20. I've seen it used in appreciation of an especially steamy, invective-laced
rant, rather than an insult. Or at least that's the way it seemed in the threads I'm thinking about.

Or I could be misinterpreting these cases. I dunno.

27. It's another stock phrase used as a humor subsitute.
It makes me feel like the speaker is a humor-impaired person who probably watches a lot of television.

37. Good morning, my dear progmom.....
I haven't heard this phrase in real life, so-called...

I have had it directed at me here in DU, after I've unloaded my thoughts all over the place....

And it was used humorously...to very good effect, I might add...

Didn't bother me at all, because the people who have used it on me have done so with love...and that makes all the difference, IMHO...

It just makes me smile....

I think it's great. When people say that sarcastically, I know I've gotten my point across in a way they'll remember.
