4. It's a lot like toddlers.

They crave attention. If they can't get it in a civilised, constructive way; they'll do it in a boorish, petty and negative way. Either way, they get the attention they crave.

Constructively ignoring them and shutting them down is really the only way to stop it. That's what's meant by the phrase "don't feed the trolls."

Don't give them the verbal thumping they so richly deserve, it's what they came here for. Go on about your business and pay them no mind.

5. When they post outright lies, though, I can't seem to let it rest.

I fear that some newbie will read those things and believe that they are true, or that another Liberal said them.
