Who would like to be sponsored here at DU?
I know I as well as others have sponsored DUers in the past by making a donation in their name. Since we are in the midst of another fund drive, I thought we could match up those needing sponsors with those who have a few extra bucks and a willingness to provide a gold star for a fellow poster.

So, who needs a sponsor? If you're willing to help, post here or just do it anonymously. What better way to help the fund drive and others at the same time. :-)

1. Well, that's an awful nice idea!
I know there are a few unemployed DUers who could use a star and would like to utilize the amazing features that are member priveledges.

Did you go to the counter demonstration: Free Soup and Free Speech? It was a rally for food collection for the hungry and protests against Bush's policies.

I didn't make it, but local papers reported from 300 to 700 protesters. I aslo heard that a couple of fundraiser-attending repukes complained to the group that was to recieve the food aid and the group declined the donation because the didn't know in advance that it was being collected at a "political" event.

Can you imagine that? Some whiney rich fucks, step out of their $2,000 lunch and pick up the phone to encourage a non-profit not to accept donations for the hungry. More than ever, I am determined to defeat the reight wing here in NC.

8. I think

it would be especially nice to sponsor someone who has lost their job. (Not me, I'm retired, but I could still use it if xtra funds should ever become available after the jobless are taken care of)

That was a very nice thing to suggest.

14. OK, we have a number of people
who have stated their need. Anyone stepping forward to donate in their names? You don't have to state who you will help if you wish to remain anonymous, but it would be nice to know that there are some benefactors out there.

I already have sponsored one person and I'll probably do a couple more — small donations that will add up. Anyone else in on this?

My Worker's Comp payments have been cut because I am permanently injured and unable to return to the kind of work I have done (great logic - they hurt me so badly I can no longer work, and now they get to starve me!).

I can probably make another very small donation, but I am rapidly losing any pride so if anyone is dying to sponsor someone, here I am!

Edited on Mon Nov-10-03 12:00 PM by prolesunited
Do you know when it expires?

Wouldn't it be nice if some stars popped up next to the names of the posters in this thread? If you're a monthly donor already, why not use the fund drive as an excuse to help someone out with a monthly gift. It doesn't have to be large. I'm sure every little bit helps.

I gotta go to the hospital now, so I hope someone can help keep this kicked.

Only thing that prevents me is I have always avoided any on-line use of my credit card, probably never will. I just don't trust it. It's not just the one-time transaction to DU that I would be apprehensive about. I would fear that my credit card info would then be on my puter forever where the right "devious" individual would know where to retrieve it. Thanks for the offer.

to make a donation.

I'm a little confused about your post. Were you wanting someone else to donate online for you even though you won't because you don't trust the online method?

I notice you're retired. If the problem is a lack of funds there's nothing wrong with mentioning that. I'm medically retired and at times funds have been short. Thankfully now isn't one of them.

Been taking my mother to her weekday appointments for the last six weeks while she's in town getting post-op radiation & physical therapy for breast cancer.

I'd ask for a DU star for her, but she's a fundamentalist Christian who loves Bush - which, frankly, should elicit more sympathy for me. ;-) Besides, checking her e-mail on Web TV is the limit of her tech savvy.

It looks like most of the matches have been made. However, supernova, areschild, Paragon need benefactors yet. Wasn't sure about Kamika or LincolnMcGrath? Can we help you two out?

Anybody else out there who wants to toss their name in? I see some people are a little shy. Anyone care to throw in another person's name you think could use a little help?

68. I got this email last week
Hello,

We are the cosmetics/bath & beauty start up company you sent your resume to.

At this time we have filled our database intern project.

However, we have another need that you may wish to consider.

The company needs a complete B2B e-commerce system attached to the Web site. We do not have the capital to purchase an e-commerce system or even to purchase online ecommerce scripts. If you feel you could create this ecommerce system despite lack of funds and that the project would look good on your resume, or the project would interest you intellectually or that you would find value in having a glowing reference from a start-up who will be referenced in magazines reaching 3,000,000 readers by February, then join us! The best we can compensate you with is experience, a written reference and $500 retail value of our product.
...
We are extremely busy and do not have time to "manage" this project. The product items, their SKU number, their minimum order quantity, case size and all other pertinent details are in the attached worksheet. If you chose to do it we would want you to work alone and just deliver a functioning solution. We would like to have this project done and a functioning solution running for testing on a server in a month or two. (If you can borrow some existing e-commerce system legally that is ok).

If interested, please write back and tell us on a scale of 1-10 (10 absolutely confident) that you can build such a system within the given perod. Remember, it is for experience, reference and free prodct only!

Thanks.

After I cried I sent it to Harper's magazine.

72. I would welcome a new star
was able to contribute last year, but still without work, have been selling my prized life time posessions just to pay bills. I would welcome a benifactor to cover small contribution to DU.

74. I'll trade a pound of our chocolate(shipping included) for a star!
It's a hard time of the year living on a disability income and trying to get food put away for the winter, and extra cash is hard to come by.
BUT
Since we make the World's Best Chocolate here at The Secret Chocolate Factory(the secret is that it's NOT a factory) here in beautiful Republic, Washington and we have at least a couple of DUers on our satisfied customer list, I'll make the offer of a barter for my star: One pound of your choice of whatever truffles or molded bars with nuts we have on hand, varying every week. Donor PM me with taste preference. We're literally a Mom-N-Pop operation but Mom has better taste than Mary See, PLUS she's still alive and hand dipping her chocolates!LOL

I wasn't going to say anything to anyone but I saw others mentioning who they had sponsored so I thought I should also.

It's been a good month and a good year for me so I thought I'd share my good fortune a little.

On edit: Bruce can give the chocolate to a person that he might find and he can do it in my name. :)

If you're not up for chocolate for you or yours, I'll donate a pound to the next raffle the local Dems have here in Ferry County. Give us a PM if you come up against the need for chocolates to fix what ails you, choco-therapy our specialty.

76. Well, I could use a sponsor.
I am totally cash strapped at this time. Just a few months ago, I had to dig up $7500 to bail my son out of jail. Don't ask why, but it wasn't so bad as to require a $75,000 bond.
Anyway, I have been dodging bill collectors until I can see my way clear to catch up.

78. One of the reasons DU is so fantastic...
is because of those that look out for other people. prolesunited, you are to be commended for a fine idea.

I just wonder if over on FR, they are beating people with bush pictures to get their last dime. Or insisting they donate $1500 so they can get a hotdog?

79. I'm so broke I can hardly afford to pay attention.....
....can't even afford to go see my Dad who's in the hospital either...much less donate again...lost my *star* a month ago after my last years donation expired...I love this place so much...eventhough I've at times cursed it's name on occasion whilst in an uber-emotional state o'mind....I'd be so very appreciative to be sponsored and when I'm able would return the favor as well....dunno how I'd have made it through the last year without DU...it's a lifeline for me in so many ways. :loveya: :* :yourock: :loveya: :* :pals: :grouphug:

80. Yo
Unemployed two years here.

Well, not totally, but I've only made $3500 so far this year.

But you can put me at the bottom of the list. I don't really need the extra goodies, and there are people who use DU a whole lot more.
