I got my new Nikon D-70 digital SLR today! Whooo hooo!
Just in time for my dad's 85th birthday party in Atlanta this Saturday. It will be at my brother's new digs in Ansley Park. Tomorrow I am cooking four Boston butts for pulled pork for the party Saturday. I'll post some pics tomorrow of DemoTex sweating over a hot pit. Here are a couple of my first pics with my new toy ...

From the garden this afternoon:

3. Great Maestro .. thanks so much.
I will join. I need all the help I can get! Do you have a D-70? An architect/artist friend from Atlanta was a guest here at the DogStar Lodge last weekend and he had a Nikon D-70. I'm an old Nikon and Pentax SLR freak, but this is my first camera since the last Pentax I bought in Vietnam over 35 years ago.

5. No, I have a Digital Rebel EOS SLR
But still the DSLR cameras are just incredible! You will have fun and Smugmug has been by far one of the best places on the web for photo hosting. It even has a great forum.

2. Oh I want one!
Looks great. Your other pics at the website are really nice, btw.

So is the Nikon D-70 still about $900?

4. I got my best deal at Adorama in NYC. Ask for Norm. He's my bud now.
I paid $989 for the D-70 Outfit (includes lens). I added a spare battery, a remote keyer, a 1 GB Sandisk Flashcard, a bag (cheap!), and Adorama's 2-year extended warranty on the Nikon. I will get $100 back on a Nikon rebate program. My pre-shipping total was $1196. Next day air for me was $62.
Word to the wise: Deal directly with Adorama (800-223-2500). I put my original order in through Amazon.com on Tuesday night, and it was as fucked up as Hogan's goat by Wednesday morning. I called Adorama direct and Norman straightened the whole mess out.

10. You beat me on that deal
I got mine at a local camera shop for 1099.00, plus a 100 mail in rebate. Got a fifty dollar gift certificate, a rebated printer, and sixteen free classes with it, plus a bunch of coupons that bring their regular merchandise down to the price I could find it on the web.

12. Thanks DemoTex. Another question, please.
I recall reading about this camera a while back. I just want to confirm that it'll take regular SLR Nikon lenses. Do I understand that correctly?

Thanks.

I can't wait to see the moth images. Be sure to post them.

16. October, I was told by the salesman that any Nikon bayonet SLR lens works.
My old Nikon and lenses were stolen years ago, so I don't have any Nikon lenses to try.

And take a few photos (I started to say shots, but that could be misunderstood these days, you know?)

18. Oh, you haven't seen the ones I've deleted/
I'll show you when I get home. She's pretty, but she has her ungraceful moments.

Not to mention, I can't sit anywhere in my apartment without her crawling up to me and licking my arm, or beard, or leg. I've got a dozen snagged shirts from trying to remove her, too.

9. I'm hoping to get some Luna moths on the porch screen tonight.
My friend Terry got several great close-up moth shots last week-end. They were on the outside of the porch screen, but it looked like ink-black velvet in the pics. I've been doing close-up bug pics all day for dad. He was a professor of entomology at the University of Georgia.
