New Mel Gibson film to be in Mayan
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Actor-director Mel Gibson is well on his way to cornering a new niche market in Hollywood -- movies written in exotic languages.

A year after breaking box-office records with "The Passion of the Christ," which was shot in Aramaic, Latin and Hebrew, Gibson has struck a deal with the Walt Disney Co. to release his next picture in a Mayan dialect.

<snip>

The story, which Gibson began writing nine months ago, is described as a "unique adventure" set 500 years in the past. Nierob said the title, "Apocalypto," was taken from the Greek word for an unveiling or new beginning.

A note on the first page of the script says: "The dialogue you are about to read will not be spoken in English." Gibson presumably will have the script translated into Mayan by a scholar of the language and release the film with English subtitles, as he did for "Passion."

Bummer that this is a Gibson film, because it sounds like a great idea.

1. Too bad it's probably thinly-veiled Christian propaganda...

Otherwise, making films in a Mayan dialect sounds like a great idea!

5. Most reports say the film is NOT religious.
And most of them point out that it's set 3000 years ago.

Perhaps it's the "True Story" of Atlantis?

2. write a movie in an obscure dialect
or, preferably, an unused one. Then, you hire the best cinematographers in the business to make you a lush and beautiful appearing film and now one will notice it is shite. Oh, and have pretty leads, much drama and a n over the top soundtrack. Bang, millions of dollars.

4. Yep. That seems to be mel's new m.o. It was one thing when it was
Jebus and Aramaic. Quite another for quetzawho-who and Mayan.

3. I no longer appreciate his work.
For all the "moral values" that christians preach, Passions was one of the most violent, lurid, unspeakably perverse movies I've ever seen. Don't want to offend anybody, but this movie is not fact, it's conjecture IMHO. I shut off the DVD of Passions and will never watch anything of Gibson's again.

8. I'm looking forward to this film.
I thought that "Passion" was a very good movie.
