Your kids' first words, if other than a variant of Mom or Dad?

Mine's first word was "water", when being taken to the bath. In Portuguese, "água" (which she pronounced "aga").

1. "Dinosaur" was one of my sons first words.

He said that a couple weeks before he said dad.

2. Both my kids chose "NO" as their very first word!

And it didn't sop any time soon after that either!!!

In fact, now that they're 39 & 36, I still remind them, when they both get themselves into some situation where they're doing way to many favors for other people..."Hey, have you forgotten the very first word you ever learned?"

Our dog's name is Ellie. He was talking to her.

My son's first word was "car". He's now 24 years old and is as much a car fanatic as he was when he was a baby.

7. Kitty.

Although 18 months he has promptly forgot and now tries to call the Cat "Dog Dog", although I think we are getting him to come back around to at least call her "Cat"

8. "The"--

He would fill it in when I did nursery rhymes and waited at appropriate points---but the first time he did it, it was on his own, without prompting.

He also pronounced "it" as "ut" for the longest time, and "caterpillar" was "catapuder." When he used a shape-sorter at 15 months, he called it a "shape-resorter," on the model of "tape recorder."

I love the way toddlers talk.

9. Mine was traditional, but first Da Da in English, then Ba Ba in Chinese

Which means "daddy" in Chinese... so, I like to remind my wife of that sometimes.

11. My son's first words...creepy really...were a full sentence

with a CONTRACTION in it...

"what's that"

I heard that question a gazillion times after that.

Sometime he made people nervous with his ability to communicate verbally like he did so little. But, that said, he never met a stranger, and always had a smile for everyone, so he still got his cheeks pinched a bunch in the grocery store by everyone who passed us with him sitting in the cart and got flashed his brilliant smile.

BTW he is almost 25 now, a delight to everyone he meets, has many many many friends, and communicates his thoughts very well. He still has not met a stranger. To know our son, is to like him instantly.

12. Duck for my son

We kept the book we were reading him when he said it.
Neither my wife nor I can remember our daughters first word though.

My wifes first word was pocketbook.

followed shortly by her first sentence "uh oh, kitty out!" when the cat slipped out the door. When we taught eyes, ears nose tummy,etc. we also taught filtrum and glabella and uvula!
