4. I voted "other"
Edited on Mon Jul-18-05 06:55 PM by skygazer
For the most part, it doesn't bug me but if it's a case of someone badmouthing my integrity or honesty to someone who doesn't already know me and so might believe it, that can kinda bother me. Or if it's someone I thought was a friend, that's gonna bug me.

Edited to add - long ago, I adopted the policy of not saying anything about anyone behind their back that I wouldn't say to their face. It's kept me out of a lot of trouble because really it always gets back to a person.

8. In my opinion
they are only trying to build themselves up by tearing others down; they do not have the guts to say it openly and allow for a rebuttal.

22. I talk trash about a co-worker behind her back
Not to build myself up, but to take out my frustration without making it impossible for us to work together. Just last week I was begging the boss to fire her incompetent, dishonest, manipulative little bitchy ass.

10. Absolutely not!
I figure if they are going to do that, then they were never a true friend in the first place. Ad if the peopel they are telling their little stories to believe them, then they also are not true friends in the first place.

12. Depends on who is saying what and who they're talking to.
When people talk shit about someone to me, it lowers my opinion of the shit-talker (usually.) For me, I tend not to tell them anything for fear they will use my words in their shit-talking... and include me!

13. I used to, - like, - when I was a teenager maybe,
but I've long since quit giving a flying fuck at a rolling donut.

Well, - let me amend that. I care what a lover says about me behind my back. I'm deeply interested in what my boss says about me behind my back. It concerns me what a very few members of my immediate family say behind my back. And possibly a long time friend or two. But in general, notsomuch.

What an individual says about someone else really tells one a great deal more about that individual.

Especially since I know that it has been going on at work since I got there. I know that they talk shit about other people too, but it bugs me.

15. Most gossip is, and those who talk shit are, almost always
Edited on Mon Jul-18-05 06:57 PM by Solly Mack
unoriginal in the shit/gossip they talk. Boring, tedious, and predictable.

If I'm to be the center of someone's universe (and people who talk shit behind your back make you the center of their universe) then the least they could do is expend a little effort and be original.

Short answer? Fuck no.

16. i care about the social disintegration of our society...
the extent to which people are compelled by their nature to "talk shit" behind my, or anyone's back, is the extent to which 'the fabric' is undone. where that is nonetheless the case, they do not care for me in sum total; i therefore trend toward caring somewhat less for them, while it is i continue to have compassion for their immortal souls being so lost wuba-wuba ~

19. ah bridgit, nice point
a society in 'which people are compelled by their nature to "talk shit"'

always good to look at the bigger picture... in a sense it is a social phenomenon

24. somebody talk'n shit about you, honey...
"why, i'll thrash'em from top to bottom-us..."

there are those clinical trails wherein people were placed in anonymous positions of authority with the means to meat out punishment and the fabric was soon undone with an amazingly quick dispatch & fashion.

"behind your back" is a poor man's...and woman's means, by which 'they' accomplish anonymity while at once being able to be as mean & cruel as they are in their hearts already as a, once again = natural course of events not merely imo

23. I expect people to do it and if they aren't, then I am doing something
very wrong. But in the work community I am in no one ever says nice things about others, so if they aren't saying bad things I am beyond notice, and that is very bad. In fact I was introduced to someone today I have never heard of who said, Oh I've heard of you. So I must have done something to piss someone off and that is good. Man the people who are in my line of work SUCK as far as being friends.

28. It bothers me when people spread bullshit lies, but if they just want
to complain or vent to someone else to get something off their chest without deliberately trying to hurt me, I suppose that's not a horrible thing.
