Poll question: ZombyPoll#24: Favorite Comic Strip: Past or Present
I skipped polls #6-23 in order to establish credibility.

Anyone who lists "Family Circus", "B.C.", or "Mallard Fillmore" gets to drink 2 day old ZombyCoffee filtered through my week-old socks!!! :P

2. Ahh, I had to be honest and go for Far Side,
which I dearly miss. But, the sentimental side wanted to vote Peanuts. RIP Charles Schultz!

7. I wanted that as a choice
Walt Kelly was one of the giants. But alas, only 10 slots! It deserves mention in this thread, and I thank you!

9. good news
There is a COMPLETE Far Side collection out now, with previously unreleased strips in it. Bad news: It is over $100. :o

But they still make the calendars and other goodies!

Some newspapers are rerunning the Far Side until New Year's to celebrate the book's release! It looks good back in the paper.

8. Tough call, but went with the Far Side
Boondocks and Doonsbury are some of the best out there, but I occassionally get upset because of the politics. I don't disagree with the politics, it's just sometimes it pisses me of that the only people in the newspaper industry that get it right are comic artists.

I loved Calvin and Hobbes, brings me to a place of innocence in my heart.

Surprised not to see Dilbert on here, it's pretty good. Not the best, but definetly worth being on the ballot.

But when it comes down to it, I gotta go with Far Side. Sometimes nutty, sometimes ironic, always funny.

10. The Far Side
Edited on Tue Nov-04-03 11:21 PM by RatTerrier
A comic that inspired Jerry Garcia himself to ask Gary Larson what kind of drugs HE was on!

"Bizarro" is a rather tepid imitator. Just not the same. But it has it's moments.

"For Better Or For Worse" is one of the worst comics ever created. I can't believe they cut down trees to publish that shit. "Family Circus" for yuppies.

"Calvin and Hobbes", "Boondocks" and "Doonesbury" are also worth the read.

And I admit I still kinda like "Garfield". You may shoot me now.

30. But remember "For Better or For Worse" introduced an openly gay ...
person and treated them as just a person.

This was over a decade ago.

Well before Ellen or Rosie.

It was a risk and many newspapers didn't run those panels.

And the strip was never the sweetness and light of Family Circus.

It's kinda Erma Brombeckish.

23. Watterson never attempted to answer that issue.
He preferred to leave many things unsaid in his strip. Kind of like how the parents were never given names.

28. Good question, but there's really no such thing as a schizophrenic
six year old. All six year olds think that way, really. Psychologists call it "magical thinking." You know, fairies, imaginary friends, playing with dolls and such.
In truth, almost all six year olds, and most of them do act that way, are schizophrenic, clinically. It's just that they're six years old, and they're ALL that way.

They seemed pretty real at the time.

Hobbes made perfect sense to me. Whether he was "real" or not seems almost beside the point. :D

I would have voted for POGO, but he wasn't there. So I went with Bloom County. Non Sequitur is not to be missed, though.

I am SO Charlie Brown

And sorry ZW, I did like B.C. when I lived near Endicott, NY, home of the B.C. Open. His strips didn't completely suck then.

Oh, and I'm really getting into Userfriendly, especially since I work for an ISP. Illiad must have a spy on our network.

34. Peanuts was *amazing* back in the day.
A few years ago, Garry Trudeau gave Charles Schulz his props "for the exquisite care with which he wrote character-driven (as opposed to gag-driven) humor."

Schulz's influence continues to spread far and wide over the comics page.

26. Definitely Calvin and Hobbes.
Bill Watterson is an absolute genius. I have NO idea how he came up with the stuff he did. He was unbelievably creative. And consistently.
I honestly don't blame him for retiring, because I don't know how someone could keep up what he did.

Dilbert and Far Side deserve honorable mention.

But I have to second your remarks on Bill Watterson and Calvin & Hobbes!
