'Cooter' (Ben Jones) Urges Fans To Skip Dukes Of Hazzard Movie
<snip>

ATLANTA -- If a former star of TV's "Dukes of Hazzard" has his way, fans of the show will skip the movie version.

Ben Jones, a former Georgia congressman who played the mechanic Cooter on the series, said profanity and sexual content in the film essentially trash what was a family-friendly show. He read a script of the movie, which comes out next month, and likens it to taking "I Love Lucy" and turning Lucy into a "crackhead."

Jones called the film a sleazy insult in an open letter posted on his Web site. He's urged fans to "hold their noses" and stay away unless the studio cleans up the movie before its release. A spokesman for Warner Brothers did not return phone calls seeking comment.

4. I just can't picture Burt Reynolds as Boss Hawg.
Isn't he supposed to be a little fat guy with an exaggerated Southern accent?

I think Danny DeVito or Bob Hoskins could have pulled it off pretty well.

16. Paul Giammatti was the only choice...

...although I'm sure he would have turned it down. Remember his character in "Private Parts"?

Burt Reynolds was about as appropriate a choice as Gary Coleman.

5. Isn't "Cooter" a slang term for "female genitalia" ... ?
You know, I seldom watched TV, preferring to spend my leisure time reading the Holy Bible, but it's things like that which force me, as a Moral American, to ask -- why does Ben Jones hate us for our freedoms?

--p!

9. And to think he lost his Congressional seat to Newt Gingirch
Actually Ben Jones is a really nice guy-lives in Va. now ran against Eric Cantor in 2000 but got NO support from the DNC or the Va. Dems.

21. From what I heard Ben Jones was a Christian Lefty
Which is a strategy the Dems should revisit in the South.

Basically run Christian Lefties like Carter and Jones who aren't all holier than thou, but can connect with the church goers down South.

10. Hmmmm... Turning Lucy into a crackhead you say...
I wonder if he's secured the rights to that. I love it! Shouldn't take me but a week to whip out a script for "Lucy & Ethel: Cocaine whores from hell" Thanks Coot!

11. I'll skip it because it is probably very stupid, like the TV show was
Every Friday night I babysat. Every Friday night, the deal was "I'll let you watch the Dukes if you go directly to bed afterwards".

25. the promos in the theater
looked even more stupid than the show. It was scary. I kept sighing loudly and my son kept whispering at me to be quiet. He thought it looked hysterical ( flying cars), but the sexually provocative crap was even worse. And they have that twit( one of those media hungry sisters) playing Daisy Duke. Who would think that you could insult that kind of a character? ;)

12. I agree. I'm sick of sex references...
And while the new British "Doctor Who" remake also has a lot of innuendo, most of it bothered me too.

And the Brits are usually better than Americans when it comes to being lewd/ribald...

This is a family-friendly movie?!

Manwhile, Rupert Murdoch froths at the mouth over violence and sex in shows, merrily forgetting his own FOX network being the bastion of all things low-brow... (he should be a conservative idiot nominate the next time he makes such a two-faced statement...)

14. Right
Flagrant disobedience, disrespect towards authority, hot-pants and cleavage, explosive bow-and-arrow kit.

Sounds like the ingredients for a good, wholesome, God-Fearin Christian weekend to me! :silly:

15. Well, I had no desire to see it in the first place
That walking VD Jessica Simpson :puke:

plus, the glorification of so much of the negative side of American culture.

I'm uncomfortable with the Confederate Battle Flag and other symbols of the Confederacy being used and being shown in a positive light.

17. I actually liked the show
What I think is gonna suck about the movie is that they've seemed to turn the Dukes into the "yuk yuk yuk" stupid backward hicks that we've seen time and time again, cliched stereotypes. The Dukes in the t.v. series were actually pretty clever and witty, just very down-to-earth.

18. I liked the original show too
And you're right, the cool thing about the Dukes is that they weren't really "rednecks". They were the clever, funny, normal people in a community of fools.

22. I was never into the original show
It seemed too cornball and Hee Hawish to me. Every character seemed to be too much of an exaggeration to be taken seriously, even in a comedic way.

Same with "Night Court"...

23. Thanks, Cooter, gosh I would have never known to
skip a movie with Jessica Simpson in it without Cooter telling me to!

:eyes:

Hell, here's the only thing I've said about this before now: DAISY WAS A BRUNETTE.

Harumph.

Not going to see it, not going to rent it. No worries, Cooter. But not for your reasons, but because it looks like a stupid-ass piece of shit and I'd never get that 90 minutes of my life back.
