71 bucks for a plate of FUGU? Are you fucking KIDDING me?

PHOTOGRAPHER'S COMMENT:

"I'm told this stuff is that famous poisonous puffer fish (fugu) on display as sashimi. The price seems about right (eep)..."

http://www.rei.org/JPN/Tokyo/index-shopping.html

Current exchange rate: 112.17 Japanese Yen = 1 U.S. dollar

8000 Yen divided by 112: SEVENTY ONE BUCKS FOR A PLATE OF FUGU!

1. That stuff can be lethal, man
I would presume what you are paying for is the expertise of the sushi chef not to kill you.

2. I'm surprised it's that cheap -- it's a big delicacy

to those who like it. What's Kobe beef per pound in Tokyo now?

3. only a fool would eat fugu offered at that price....
Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 04:52 PM by mike_c
Not that I'm likely to ever eat it at any price, but my understanding is that competently prepared fugu is generally quite a bit more expensive than that-- more on the order of $200 a plate. Incompetently prepared fugu isn't really much of a bargain....

5. Only a fool would eat fugu wrapped in saran wrap on a shelf :)
If it's gonna be eaten, it better damn well be prepared at the same time.

6. That's not a fugu puffer
Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 05:04 PM by DinoBoy
It's a Porcupine Fish. Fugu is derived from Takifugu occelatus:
