Am I wrong to be disappointed in Soylent Green?
I think I'm the last liberal in America to see Soylent Green.

It was a good movie that could have been a great one.

If I was making that movie, I would have done this:

* radically truncated the old man's death scene
* thrown out most of the action between Charlton Heston and the "furniture"
* really cut down the length of time spent watching Charlton Heston and the old man eat the food stolen from the murdered Soylent Corporation executive's apartment
* and used the time I freed up to show what happened AFTER Charlton Heston told the people in the church that Soylent Green is made out of people.

"Soylent Green Is People!" //whack--straight to the credits//

Watch The Stuff to see what I would have liked...after Mo Rutherford and Colonel Spears told the world that The Stuff eats your brain, you got to see several minutes of people blowing up Stuff stands and torching supermarkets, and finally a feeding-at-gunpoint of the Stuff execs.

Really, I'm just disappointed.

1. It falls a little short.
Have you ever seen Zardoz? or A Boy and His Dog?

13. I was judging it by the standards of films of its era
Of course you're not going to get a quadrillion-dollar CGI epic in 1973. That's not the point.

The point is that we never found out what the people who had nothing but Soylent Green to eat did after they learned what it was made of. I know that if I had unwittingly been forced into cannibalism I'd be highly pissed to find out.

Like I said, good but could have been great if they'd knocked out all the extraneous shit.

3. You know what else it needed?
A robot battle, and some tits.

I'm with you... it's very dated and rather hackneyed. I find the same of the original Farenheit 451... it's just a poorly-made film.

Plus, everyone knows from the third frame onwards that Soylent Green is people.

9. It's like tofu...
..it absorbs the tastes of other things.

We have it in Canada, but it's marketed under the trade name "Mr. Food".
