15. But that would upset...
the animal-rights contingent and the flamewar would just startup all over again. :eyes:

but I love the idea. :-)

Just don't wear it down, you know, in certain areas there.

7. No but we'll prolly have a M-16 avatar soon.
Or perhaps a cluster bomb, or pussy-assed cruise missile (like playing a fucking video game, eh?), avatar, that'd be cool.

Better yet maybe we should just stick to what we've got?

12. No, that isn't the Dean supporters' position.
Is it yours? You're the one who wrote it.

Putting words in your opponents mouth is an improper technique of arguing, it's called the "straw man".

14. Uhm, Dean and his supporters are in no way racist
or "OK" with the Confederate flag as a symbol of racism. Perhaps you don't understand sarcasm?

17. Like it or not
It's a sad historical fact. I won't refight the war or the reasons for it.

Perhaps it's best we remember all that fought on the Confederate side in the "War of Northern Agression" were not fighting for any other reason than it was expected by the community and to "opt out" was not a viable alternative for many.

My gggrandfather was in Hilliard's Legion, later absorbed into the 59th Alabama. His final battle was Appomattox.

I've read his letters. He fought primarily because of peer pressure - which was mostly whipped up by the newspapers. He owned no slaves.

Let's remember, at the time, many folks entire worlds ended a day's horseback ride or less away. The words of the local leaders and state leaders held great sway because national politics and news were often delayed by weeks or months in reaching other areas of the country. Add that to the illiteracy issue and you have a perfect recipe for promoting any position you like. As happens with many movements of all stripes, a relative few agitated the masses.

So, like it or not, Confederate history, including flags, is a part of my heritage. Do I agree with the COnfederacy and it's actions? No.

Would I display a Confederate Flag avatar? Definitely not.

Apologist? Definitely not! Realist? Definitely!
